Hi Can any one help in pointing me in the direction of a source of cast fly wheels, I usually get them from RDG but the ones they supply are a little too much on the chunky side for the engine I want to build. I want something about 6" to 7" diameter.

Its of a grasshopper engine that is on display at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, I could fabricate one using laser cut plate, but I want to continue the "Helping Dad" theme with this engine and I don't think that method would be suitable for a beginner.

      Thanks

      Stew

          Try these

          Atelier

Martin Model may be a bit heavy although there is a 6" that could have the rim thinned

          TS have some skinny ones

Engineers Emporium also have quite a few but don't show them in the catalogue

If its just plate use John's "Mill a flywheel" method. It would be good to see that technique written up in ME and would follow your theme of no expensive castings. We've both used the method successfully. I

Pete, teh lads & dads series does not use a milling machine though nothing wrong with a drill press and file.

Is it this one stew? if so I would have thought built up like you have done for the smaller flywheels would be best given the round spokes

                Hi Jason/Pete

                Thanks for your input.

Yes that is the one Jason as its a haulage engine it's reversed using a slip eccentric that I though would be a nice touch that I think could be done on the helping dad theme.

                I'll check those links out

I'm mulling over giving a number of options for making the flywheel for those with a mill Johns mill a fly wheel method is worth considering for one option, but for those who don't have the option of a mill I though a cast flywheel would be best.

                Cheers

                Stew

I suppose one other option would be to use the cheap RDG 7" flywheel as a source for the rim and give the builder instruction on how to scrap the spokes and make up a new hub with round spokes. Or just buy a 6" square of 10mm plate, saw off the corners, turn round and then trapan out the middle to make a rim
