For those of a non engineering background, often the lack of a correct name hampers a search for what you are actually looking for.

Eventually i discovered those fancy convex & concave knurls on scientific instruments of yesteryear are known as 'Rope Knurls'

Does anyone still make these i wonder??

I guess a good hobby engineer could probably make his own, silver steel tooling should be good enough for brass?~ i'll have to pass on that for now.wink

That's a nice video, haven't seen any of Clickspring's before – seem well made and informative, and the guy really appears to know what hes talking about. Have already learmed a few new tips.

I sourced some from Accu Trak in the US in 2016 which were from their KC series, Looking at their website today they do not list them as standard parts so they could be made to order. They were not a low cost item but have worked very well for my various builds and repairs including a William Smith designed vertical bug key for sending Morse.

I made a small concave knurl for making brass terminal thumbscrews (nuts) for my synchronome connections. I free hobbed a silver steel wheel using a 2 BA tap ( or it may have been a 4 BA) and then hardened. Worked very well.

                regards Martin

That's an easier way of producing the wheels I like it!

Thank you for all that chipped in.

I suspected any commercial offerings would be pricey

Not sure i'm up to making my own just yet, but i guess if you don't try you'll never know!

…..Seem to be gathering an ever growing list of things to make…. & that's just the things i need to make before i can make what i really want to make.laugh
