I think the real crass-ness is provided by the combination of the model with the waffle below the photo..

They must have engaged the very best Branding & Marketing Consultants that the profits from over-priced cars can buy. . Where is Dilbert when you need him?

I'd love to know the thinking behind it. Using 'thinking' loosely, of course.

Why would a major builder of luxury cars celebrate one of its most prized models by depicting it so neglected it is nearly only fit for scrap? It just doesn't make sense.

I suppose if we asked Mecedes-Benz, we'd be either ignored or fobbed off with some pretentious, haughty "arty" twaddle best repeated in Private Eye magazine's Pseuds' Corner column.

because as found, 'original', unmolested, looking like a heap of scrap is patina and considered desirable. At it's worst, they won't even wash off the dirt accumulated from sitting in a draughty shed for 40 years…..

With patina like that it should also have a spreading pool of fuel from the rusted out petrol tank and be running on 41/2 cylinders. You get repairs like that when

1. it's fell into the hands of it's last ever owner who can't afford it.

2. next stop is the scrap yard.

Perhaps it refers to their famous reliability? The Middle East was once full of high-mileage Mercedes. Didn't do so well in the UK because we salt our roads in winter and British snow is nasty wet stuff that sprays up and under.

I think that a huge ammount of time and effort went into aging that model. Whether it was worth it is always a matter of opinion, and I'm not going to make any comments.
