Can someone tell me what the description of this 4" wide vice means? It says '45deg either side'. It looks like it goes to 90 degrees – anyone have one of these and can advise?

Can you give a link – there's more than one Soba tilting vice out there!

              Matt,

That vise appears to be a knockoff of the Universal Vise and Tool vise made in the US. Mine swivels, tilts, and rolls side to side. On mine the tilt goes from a little below horizontal to vertical. It rolls 45 deg. either side of horizontal.

The shoba vise shown only tilts and swivels. I suspect the people responsible for the description of the vise had no idea what they were talking about.

Beware of products from India. A few years ago I purchased an angle vise from Grizzly. After examining it I returned it to Grizzly. My first complaint was the quality of the iron (High graphite content). The finish was poor. The only tools from India that I found satisfactory were the turning and boring tools sold under the Glanze brand.

                Really!?

Chronos list at least two for a start… and Shoba's website has four dfferent tilting stiyles plus three more styles you could describe as tilting!

I think the description is an accidental repeat of the one for this vice:

                http://www.shobha-india.com/precision-machine-vises/precision-machine-vices-p5.html#1

Some Indian stuff is excellent (e.g. Zither chucks), but other companies are where China was 20 years ago. Shobha/Soba are one of the more reliable Indian brands but not the best.

Matt, I think it means the graduations for the 45deg tilt are on either side ? It will tilt 45deg and swivel 360 as it says in the description.

I have one of these bought many years ago for a particular job, its OK for drilling and LIGHT milling, not the most rigid tool in the box, however its reasonably accurate and good value for money but it all depends on what you expect it to do.

Just my 5 bits ! John

Neil, I think you are right and that the vertical is 90 deg. Thank you.

The vice is not actually for me but a new enthusiast embarking on a new hobby of metal removal smiley

A 4" version of the Soba is reasonable priced for someone who doesnt have endless funds. Of course if there are any other suggestions, feel free to let me know. BTW, I bought a 50mm Soba vice about 12 years ago and its still very good.

I bought a Soba toolmaker's vice some 16 years go. Aside from having to replace the clamp screw because of a stripped thread in the moving jaw and re-machining the jaw seats so the the jaws are no longer at 87 degrees it's fine

More recent Soba stuff I've seen has been fine.

I've got a Soba 4" milling vice and it looks well made. It certainly has or rather had a nice finish and I've checked it for accuracy and it's fine.
