May I remind forum members of the SMEE website:

        http://www.sm-ee.co.uk/

If you haven't visited for a year or three it's been brought bang up to date.

By 'bang up to date' you seem to mean 'written by a teenager with no thought about bandwidth' so it shovels megabytes of pictures down the line without any consideration of whether you are in the sticks with a 1 meg dial up modem. Even at work with the corporate bandwidth it froze my computer for 20 seconds to load all that stuff.

That's the trouble with wordpress 'web designers' they think it is all about pictures and not about content value.

So if you are making a club web page don't put fancy scrolling pictures and videos on the home page keep it down to a megabyte.

                dont know Interesting …

The first time I tried Neil's link, it loaded in less than two seconds on the iPad.

Having read Bazyle's reply, I tried again … fine

Just tried once more, and it froze !!

… I can't see how the page content could be causing an intermittent problem.

Just frozen on me too. Not a problem my end I have 150mb cable. Probably a slow server compounded by everyone trying Neil's link…

Well Bazyle you are not the only one. I just tried connecting to the SMEE site, after more than ten minutes of waiting my computer still hasn't managed to connect. Don't think that it is much wrong with my web connection, because I also tried some Internet speed tests while waiting and got over 40Mb/s.

It probably though the sudden increase in attention was a DOS attack!

Earlier it was down completely, I cleared my cache and it loads in about 5 seconds on my humble 2.8 meg connection.

Just a thought, one ISP had a major failure at a data centre today which has caused intermittent problems for me today, so if they use the same one…

Unlikely to have been mistaken for a DOS attack. I used to work for the company that hosts the SMEE website and their firewalls and monitoring systems are more than capable of discerning between a DOS attack and a sudden increase in 'credible' traffic, it would take a lot more attention than would be given by the entire membership of this forum to trigger an alert. A DOS attack signature is indicated by many hundreds if not thousands of access requests in rapid succession and often from a specific IP address range.

There's no indication of issues with any of their DC's. There is however, evidence to indicate that there was either an issue with the database hosting platform or with the interface between it and the web platform. The response times from the web platform were varying wildly during the outage.

Knowing SMEE it was probably the 14 day wait while they swapped from the Roman calendar to the Gregorian one.

After the first time your PC will have cached the photos so not be a problem and will load quickly if the dynamic content also is available. My grumble is in general about the number of sites built on templates designed to have a great big photo minimum and in this case a succession of scrolling photos. I want to get the basic info and then decide if I want to see lots of photos and scroll around the screen.

My local village web site has recently been 'improved' like this so it just becomes more difficult to find the quick bit of info like what time something starts. I blame WordPress, templates and people who think they are web experts because they can click on the bits of the template builder.
