Small Nylon Gears

I have been trying to locate a replacement gear for the Hip Shaking Santa (yes I know it's sad!) Christmas toy which we have. It no longer works as the gear has cracked at the bottom of one of the teeth, consequently it jams up the gear mechanism. It's a plain gear 6mm o/d, 5mm wide, 10 teeth and it fits on a 2 mm shaft. I've looked at both Davall and Muffetts websites and also done a google search to no avail. Looks as if it might be a bin job unless one of the forum members knows where I can get one. I'll bet there are millions of them in China all lined up in gearboxes for the Christmas toys we will buy this year…….??

Have you looked in the HPC catalogue? or on hpcgears.com

In my experience they have the biggest range and most of it is in stock. Prices are good but a helluva lot more then they used to be and postage is expensive. They justify it on the 'we dont have a minimum charge' basis.

If nothing else its worth getting the paper catalogue before they go web based only.

Many thanks for the lead. I've had a look at the HPC website and downloaded their catalogue (all 837 pages of it!). I've also sent a request for one to be sent to me as the range of gears is, as you say, very extensive and it will be easier to thumb through a catalogue rather than staring at a screen.

From the quick look I had in the spur gears section nothing seemed to jump out as being what I need so if any other forum members have a suggestion then the more likely I am to find a suitable gear.

Really its the PCD you need rather than the OD but there is are 10 tooth gears at 5.2 and 6.5 OD in the metric section and similar diameter ones in imperial (see G0.5-10 for example).

Depending on how much trouble you want to go to you could file one by hand, I doubt its has to run at high speed or high load, clock and watchmakers made things like that years ago.

Squires Models in Bognor Regis sell some plastic gears. I am not sure if it matches your requirements exactly but might help. They do a large catalogue of bits and pieces. Many items are not very common these days.

Hi Nigel,

If you dont mind the work in Maplins they have a product called Poylmorph.Its small plastic /nylon beads. You put some in hot water and it becomes mouldable to any shape and can be machined. It goes clear when ready and white when cured. Any surplus can be reheated and used again. I think its about £9-10 a tub but brilliant stuff.

Also worth looking at Rapid Electronics and Technobots. It might also be worth popping into your local model shop that does radio controlled cars planes etc. as most of the servo manufacturers sell sets of replacement gears in both plastic and metal. You might well find someting that you can adapt.

Many, many thanks to all who have responded to my posting. It never ceases to amaze me the information and advice which is available on this forum and is so freely given.

I've had a look at the Technobots website and ordered 10 pinion gears (some for stock!!) – total £1.50. The killer is the p&p which brings the order up to £4.75. Still, if it sorts out the problem it will be worth it and we can have our Hip Shaking Santa back in action for next Christmas!! Still sad isn't it??

A couple of things I forgot to mention was that I had a look at the Squires website – really good with lots to spend your hard earned cash on, but they didn't have any gears listed which would be suitable. I also had a look at the Maplin website and in particular the Polymorph granules which could be a useful thing to remember for the future.
