So, I have acquired myself a nice set of slip gauges. However (as with all "bargains&quot there is a snag. Two are missing, the .050" and the .122" the latter doesn't bother me too much, but the latter I would like to replace. Would anyone know how I could get myself a piece of something that measures exactly .050"?

Ideally I would like ground stock but anything will do at a pinch or I would be happy to buy one. I would not be happy though spending the £20 that some of the online suppliers are asking for just this one gauge.

I'm sure Cromwell and MSC J&L both do individual slip guages. Although they may not be cheap it's probably worth getting them as sods law…..

Also worth trying Rotagrip – last year they supplied me with a couple I was missing from a set at a very reasonable price ( under £8 each inc p&p).

Rotagrip advertise individual slips on Ebay (trading as Fordeight) so they do sell them.

When I got a set there was one missing but within a week the right size appeared on ebay. Different seller but makes you wonder if they had been scanning the ads for sets with missing pieces and then offering the bits knowing the buyer would be looking.

I am sure there is a bit of that goes on. However, I bought this at my local tool emporium for £15 and I snaffled a load of other Swag too. Both Rick and Niel's posts about their Boot Sale hauls spurred me on to greater efforts. Bought a nice block – pic to follow later and a couple of good angle bars AND a long searched for Bench Block, presently in the Acid bath.

I have emailed Rotagrip and Cromwell so I will let you know.

Wasn't joking, got a 0.050" one here in a box of gubbins. It's yours for free, I'll check tomorrow to see if i have the 0.122" you may be lucky as there was only one 50 thou one and nothing close but loads round the 0.100" mark.

They must sell them separately as some while ago I picked a big box of loose slip gauges up but many were multiples, like over twenty 0.500" ones and I can't see a firm buying 20 sets just to cannibalise them

Just a thought, when searching ebay don't forget to search under Gauge Blocks as they sometimes do not cross check with slip gauges.

True story:

As many know I do a lot of electric motor repairs for the rewind trade. Don't rewind but do the mechanical work like broken shafts, spun bearings etc.

One of my jobs it to recondition the brush gear on special DC motors after they have caught fire or melted.

The brass brush boxes are usually folded up from brass sheet and hammered round formers. This is where the box of spare slips comes in handy.

These came originally from Erricsons telephones out of the toolrooms, many of the larger ones have Packing or P etched on them and I suspect they are second grade and were bough in for just this purpose as they had loads of first grade carbide slips in sets.

Because they are not in sets and have P etched on them, to me they are just packing and ideal for brush boxes as you can always build up a stack to the right size then whack the sheet round them and get a nice square brush box.

So one day I'm doing a set when I see this pillock approaching who used to be the bane of my life in that every job he brought had to be perfect and he went to great pains to tell me how to do it even though the jobs were crap jobs.

So this day i spotted him, rushed over and got the set of first grade carbide inspection slips I own but in all fairness never had a use for them. Pulled three out the box, similar to the sizes i was using and as he entered proceeded to smack this sheet round the packing slips.

He stopped dead and asked if I was using slip gauges, I replied yes because the bends had to be exact, square and to a tolerance of 0.000000023"

He shook his head slowly and agreed with me but that was the last time I saw the twonk.

Oh I know for a fact it works Neil, my missus fills the toilet with leftover Coke once in a while to keep it clean. So there you go, more housekeeping tips

I once worked at a mod research establishment. ..in any case a rep from a tool supply company called on the head of the workshop. ..
Amongst other things pushed was the newest ultra small drills…of the size to drill holes down hair…
Nothing smaller brags rep…
Sample me on them then….

After a while the samples were posted back to rep…with holes drilled …made them look like a penny whistle……
