Is anyone seeing Andy’s image?   I’m not. Only: IMG_4016What are these called and where would I get some. The lathe is a Leinen.

The forum sends the URL “https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/hm_bbpui/temp/xhvsbvyq99i3qszksroxqa7pjzjx663e.jpg” which returns a 404 Not Found error.  It is lazy loaded.

I expect the image will appear in due course.  Pretty sure this is a forum bug, not due to anything Andy did.

And low and behold, the image is being displayed correctly!

Sorry I don’t recognise the thingy.  Is it an ornamental oiling point plug?  An earlier version of those spring-loaded ball-bearing wotsits.

It’s an oil nipple, Myford used 2BA ones but with a flat end. Leinen sound german or swiss so may use 0BA = 6mmx1. Noel.

Probably be making your own, if you want the exact same pattern – you might be able to dress up an off the shelf ball oiler or oil / grease nipple to match.

It’s possible that it is ‘drive-fit’ – pressed in.

Not seen that particular style before, but it is an oiling nipple.

Not sure you will find any, as Diogenes said, probably better to make your own.

I had to make some 1/4 scale grease nipples for a model and it was pretty simple despite the tiny size.

It is an 8mm push fit and I have I have searched flea bay for oil nipple without success. I have sourced the type that are slightly concave but would have liked to find the domed type as that was what was fitted originally. This is a photo of the concave type.IMG_4017

Those are just made from pressed tinplate or similar.

It’s not a big job to make a couple. Looks like steel or nickle rather than brass.

Couple of ball bearings and a short spring, job done.

Try looking for ball oiler rather than oil nipple.

No history with this seller, just the first that popped up on Ebay.

Nigel, thanks for that suggestion. It produced loads of results but all were the flat type. I tried adding the word domed but no joy☹️. Ah well I have to make do with flat ones, it’s not the end of the world. Thanks everyone for you efforts.

This was the only one I could find in the U.K., there are more suppliers about, but the ones that came up in my search, are mostly in Europe

It might be better to have them all as flat ones then they can all be oiled with one can/gun

The Ball Oiler that you showed, second, is usually 6 mm OD, and should be available from most of the Model Enginering suppliers, such as Arc EuroTrade, Warco, RDG etc

The only way of extracting the failed one seems to be to either lever it out, if you can, or to force in a self tapper and use that as a point to be gripped in pliers, or wire cutters to prise it out.

Fitting the replacement is merely a matter of gently tapping into place with a piece of wood between nthe new Ball Oiler and the mallet or hammer.

I replace the damaged domed oile with a dished one  I suppose I can cover it up if I’m turning cast iron  the dished shape will be a collection point for cast iron”dust”IMG_4023
