Are the lost wax castings too small?

So far I have invested in the set A castings for the Sir William Armstrong horizontal hydraulic engine.

Has anyone built this engine using "set B" the lost wax castings? I have heard rumours that some of them might be too small and you cannot make the parts to the drawing dimensions. Can anyone confirm if any of the castings have any such problems? Thanks

Working through kit A: I have also found that the water jet parts have been cut udersized and the finish leaves a lot to be desired.

              Good afternoon Jo

I have purchased all three kits. But as yet have not started the build. I Hope to make a start some time in 2015. I did have a look at the cast base plate yesterday and looking at the drawing there appears to be a part of the casting missing. The position for the feed pump shows four securing holes. But the casting does not appear to have the required material to take two of the holes. It might require a block to be fixed to the casting. I have not had the time to rely get into the details yet. Have you any further information on this possible problem.

How is your build coming on?

Check your lost wax castings very carefully mine were undersized twisted and cast of a yellow metal that is like chewing gum

They are not fit for purpose and I bined the lot and fabricated the said castings , as Jo commented the WJ parts are under sized width wise Evan the replacement was to thin ,bin again and fab up a new set.

I am of the opinion that the waxes were made from AM finished parts and therefor are to small after casting

The engine runs fine when completed but the valve chest is of poor design and is difficult to get a smooth flat face down that hole

                Good luck Stuart

£480 for castings that are too small! I hope you managed to get a refund Stuart.

The article shows the areas where the mounting blocks locate being machined out and pads added so there is no problem with that part of the casting. It just makes for easier casting as to have the pads as part of teh base would need several loose pieces to the pattern which can get lost and also drive up the cost of the casting

Thanks for the fast replies about the problems with the kit.

When I get time I will check the sizes of the castings. Until the I still have a couple of other engines to try to get finished.
