I needed to make a V anvil for my hardness tester today. Basically a disc with a locating spigot and a v across to hold round items. Turning the disc was straightforward but milling the V was a bit of a conundrum. I wanted to set the anvil up at 90 degrees, cut with an end mill so that I had a faced surface then rotate through 180 degrees and face the other surface. Not going to happen with the dividing head on my mill – completely out of headroom:
Sir John Stevenson rode to the rescue with one of his collet blocks. I'd only bought it because someone on here said they were good for holding round stuff in the vice:
I'd already drilled a small hole through the centre of the anvil so I knew that when the v was symmetrical with hole that the v centre would be in the centre of the anvil.
Useful item, a collet block.
Cheers,
Rod
