This is really one for the archives in case it helps someone in the future.

I went to do a bit of milling this week, and when I switched the mill on there was a bang, a flash, and then darkness. Luckily, the problem came from the DRO and the mill was fine.

It turns out that it was the switch mode power supply in the DRO that had failed, and a quick look on Amazon showed that you can get replacements very cheaply. I paid £7.68 for a “KeerSen DC 5V 5A 25W Switching Power Supply”, which I swapped out without any trouble. Just be aware that there is a pot on the power supply to adjust output by about plus or minus 10%, so set this up to 5 V with a screwdriver and multimeter before you put it into your DRO.

Don't know if KeerSen are any good or not but I've never heard of them myself. If you have problems with it or want to play safe, I'd recommend a Mean Well equivalent that wouldn't cost a lot more. They are a reputable Taiwanese supplier.

Useful for me David, in the present. The Sino 2-axis readout which came with my Axminster lathe failed within warranty – when I rang them the tech guy said it was probably a PSU failure (so obviously not the first time) and they shipped me out a replacement pronto – but never collected the defunct unit. I tested it with an external PSU and the tech guy was right.

Just need to find compatible scales, then I could digitise my mill.

            Rob.

One of my Sino DRO PSUs failed after 10 or so years constantly powered up.

Machine DRO confirmed they could order me a PSU but I stripped it before ordering a replacement, something around £2 got me new electrolytics from Maplin and it's running fine.
