Single point with a tap?

I may need to cut an internal M42 X 1.5 thread in a steel part. I don't have an internal single point tool in my arsenal but I do have a M10 X 1.5 tap and was wondering if I could use this mounted in the tool post. I seem to remember reading about someone doing this. Anyone tried it, is it easier or more difficult than a single point tool? Thanks in advance!

Yes no reason not to. Many people use just one insert out of a Coventry die head.

I have done something similar when trying to cut a 40TPI thread on a metric lathe. I used a 1/4 40TPI tap in a handle and hand chased the thread. I was using two aluminium castings as lens mounts. one was very successful but on the other it skipped a bit but I was still able so screw the lens in.
