Got started on my next project – Made a complete hash of the 1st attempt of a part (see thread in Beginner section "Reading a drawing – Radius" ) so tonight sat down and did some careful marking out on plastic first. Looking forward to the challenge

Evening 2 – the cutting out begins – Thanks JasonB for the tip about pinning the 2 pieces together. Will do some filing tomorrow.

I think you may not have allowed for the material to make the bent feet that the frame is attached to the cylinder with, check the side view and top view for design and dimensions.

                Thanks Mike

I decided to go with Jason's suggestion of placing a piece of square bar between the sides.

Phew, thats a relief that you haven't cut off a bit you were going to need, putting on is allways harder than taking off I find. Glad it's all under control and all the best with the project.

                    Hi everyone

Here is my progress for today

After a morning of cleaning the garage (aka workshop) up and adding some extra lights, I finally got onto cutting some metal.

Crankshaft webs finished off and then the crankshaft pieces and pin made. Finished off with the top of the con rod.

I am quite pleased with progress.

                      Thanks for looking.

So I have been a bit slack in taking pictures and posting lately. This may, in part, be due to the arrival of this into my workshop family.img_20150510_082354 copy.jpg

But here are some pictures of my progress in the last week or so.

                          1. The Con Rod

                          img_20150510_082336 copy.jpg

                          2. The very un-finished cylinder

                          img_20150510_082430 copy.jpg

                          3. The Con Rod links – I had no 8mm plate in stock so I used a piece of 10mm and practiced cutting metal on the Mill. Now I need to actually cut out the links.

Well it has been a while

The mill has been in pieces and rebuilt as part of a CNC conversion and has taken a large chunk of my time.

Then using said mill to engrave christmas presents has taken more time.

But some progress has been made

New side plates have been milled and formed. The cylinder block has been milled and drilled and now awaits the arrival of M2.5 taps and threaded rod.

Quite pleased with how it is looking

                            Bruce

Next time you are in a good Motor Museum (eg Mulhouse, France) ask about the Gobron Brille car engine, around 1910. That had a similar idea but with the cylinder vertical over the crankshaft. One con rod was conventional, the other was linked by straps down each side of the cylinder to a pair of 180 degree crankpins. And internal combustion, as you might guess.

                              Regards, Tim

Well things have been moving along for this little engine and today it got hooked up to the compressor.

                                And it ran party

                                Here is a short video

I am very happy that it actually runs even with a quite small temp flywheel compared to the design.

Thanks Julius for an interesting build

                                  That's fantastic. smiley

Nice job of an unusual engine.

In the words of the Madden Brothers "We are done"

Flywheel mounted via a split tapered mandrel type of arrangement which removed a good amount of wobble. A method I will definitely look at using again.

All painted up and made reasonably shiny.

At the beginning of the month it ran for 3 days for about 4hrs per day off a small fridge compressor with my other engine.

I had the pleasure to show it off to the designer, Julius De Waal  and his wife,  last week whilst I was in Auckland on business. Julius is a lovely man and I look forward to building a few more of his designs.
