I am rebuilding a 3″ scale Wallis and Steevens Simplicity roller built in the 1970’s by my father-in-law. I am getting leakage past the closed regulator. The leak is not enough steam or air to turn the crankshaft but enough to give it a kick when the valves are put in gear.

      Can anyone suggest a cure?

Have a look at the regulator valve face and it’s seating for signs of scoring it may need re lapping to a good seal, and the valve wants a little bit of free play on the valve buckle to allow the steam pressure to seat the valve to it’s seating.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think the seating is ok but your suggestion about the valve buckle seems a possibility. I will double check the valve has free movement.

Close inspection and using marking blue revealed just a couple of high spots on the valve seating, no more than specs on the cast iron surface, probably corrosion. After scraping the surface the valve is now seating ok. Thanks MichaelR for the advice.
