      Hello,

I’m thinking of purchasing a Sievert torch and hose.

I would like some help with a nozzle/jet size / part number.

At the moment I use the propane with a plumbers torch

or a small butane torch on Gaz.

My work varies from making replacement keys for old brown furniture to anything else that is too

delicate/difficult to arc/stick weld. I’m not a model maker. But I do enjoy this forum.

I don’t want to purchase a torch with the wrong burner/jet.

Andrew Berry (Jewellery) on Youtube is very good.

      Would appreciate any suggestions.

Sievert’s basic beginners set with the Pro86 handle and 2941 burner (includes jet)should do most things unless you want to solder big boilers. Add a 4bar regulator and off you go. Hamilton Gas are usually quite reasonable on cost.

Agree with Jason. I have got the range of Sievert burners. They come sized from 1/4kW upwards (if I remember). If you bought the 1/4, 1 and 3kW burners, and maybe a bigger one, you can then handle a range of jobs from a few mm size up to 80mm lumps of iron or brass, etc. The big boiler 30kg jobs need a 30kW burner or two, but you won’t be going there.

The Pro86 kit appears not to include a hose failure valve. You should use one to stop life getting very interesting if you put the flame through the gas supply tube.

A word of warning, when connecting the supply tube to the handle always use spanners on both the nut and the union. The gas tube through the handle is not very strong and can be fractured. Going to A&E with a burnt hand can wreck your day.

Silver soldering is one of the most satisfying jobs I know.

The important thing is not just the amount of heat but conserving the heat and to this end you need a small hearth. It can be as simple or large as you like depending on the job. Fire bricks to make one can be found on the net or from a local wood burner company. A small pot of cement will be needed to set things in place. A welded angle iron frame will make a neat job of it. Good luck. Noel.

No need for the cement, angle iron frame is nice, but just placing the heat resist board/bricks to  make a nest works. Even old gas fire radiants can be called into play (not very robust, but they cost nothing)

Don’t get bricks. Get the compressed vermiculite boards used in modern woodburners. At EDMES we had a talk / demo and these were recommended.

You can also silver solder small items with the 28mm standard burner, I’ve got smaller burners but never bother to fit them.

I tend to just use my Vermiculite blocks and boards loose so that they can best be arranged to suit the job in hand rather then being lumbered with them fixed to a hearth

Yes, I have that very same kit and use the supplied burner for pretty much everything.

                            Thanks everyone.

Torch ordered, as recommended by JasonB.

I will get the ‘5 x Vermiculite Villager Fire bricks’ as per Bazyle.

The forum has speeded up nicely too.
