Silver soldering

I am thinking of silver soldering brass to steel, is this a good idea.

I am thinking of using brass bolts to attach the brass in place and once soldered in place file the heads off. once complete, the steel will be painted and the brass polished and sealed.

This project will give me the chance to practice silver soldering for when I eventually do the boiler on my Rob Roy loco.

It will work OK ! Depending on the size of the job as to the heat you will need and this is where some people come unstuck. I had a job this week and even using a six jet burner and oxy propane it took a while to accumulate enough heat. A brazing hearth with insulation and charcoal may be the way to go. The right flux is vital and for large work HT5. Good luck Noel.

Put some flux in the screw holes and around the screws to make sure the solder can flow all around them and then you will get the gaps filled and just see a very slight difference in colour when all filed flat which may tarnish a bit darker than the brass over time.

Thank you both. They are not large parts, I was also thinking of centre punching the mating surfaces to give the solder somewhere to flow into

@JasonB yes, I have seen his done with good effect of hiding the screws.
