Having an hour spare this morning, I thought I’d do a bit of maintenance on the lathes.

Sight glass on the headstock and feed gearbox looked very low. Not been checked for a while, so possibly leaked?

Put about half a litre in the feed gearbox, bearly any change! Gets a pipe cleaner and dips it, way over full!

      Bugger.

Next the headstock, I can see the sight glass with the top off, does need a bit. Got carried away again and went over the top of the sight glass.

Now wishing I’d done something else. I’ll leave both of them to either leak or stay as they do!

Once again I’m thinking of pulling the glass out and having a level like on a car gearbox, unscrew a plug and watch for the drip. I did this mod on my bandsaw with good success.

      Anyhow, onwards and upwards….

No foul no harm. Onward through the fog!

Those cheap plastic sight glasses seem to take on a layer of scum that gives a false reading after a few years. Level plug would be more failsafe but maybe you could take the sightglasses out and clean them so they work properly?
