I’ve just tried to download but get blocked – possibly they are trying to drop a tracker that gets blocked by my system but I thought I’d enabled everything dealing with Siemens.

There seems no technical info I can gain access to – all the pages are marketing BS + pretty pictures that are useless – key for me is will it run on Linux ?

Frances – I too was blocked at first. – Sign in as a business and you go straight to the download.

Keep trying different approaches to get to the download page.

Sorry Rod – but your link is to "Solid Edge 2D Drafting". I may be mistaken but I do not think this is the same as the full blown SE 3D Community Edition that myself, Barrie and Raymond are referring to. I downloaded my software from this site – the one Raymond originally recommended:

                Solid Edge 3D Community Edition

It is a large download (3.5Gb approx.) and will take a little while – but it is well worth it.

Of course, if you just want 2D drafting, then the other version may suit you – but I am importing selected parts of TurboCAD 2D files into SE and just locking the 'plane' to work on them. As far as I can see this works perfectly fine (using Smart Dimensioning etc) and then I just save any new/revised work as SE files.

Lots to learn but great fun!

                Regards,

                IanT

Solid Edge is not certified to run on any other Os other than Win 10. I think you would have to jump through hoops, and even IF you got it to run, it would be so unstable Would not be a good experience.

As starter of this thread, I'm glad to report that Siemens again likes me… smiley

But after my first very modest trial, I already am in difficulties. As this thread has gone wildly off-topic (the inch conundrum), I'm asking if it would be appropriate to discuss these problems here (esp. with Mr. Lever, who it seems has good knowledge), or if it would be better to start a dedicated Solid Edge thread? (hopefully staying on-topic).

                    Opinions welcome!

                    Regards
                    Hans

Success but ;- My poor old laptop cannot handle the graphics. Fine on a desktop workstation. The nice lady on the tutorials has a voice that could send the most severely inflicted insomniac straight to sleep.

Set aside half a day from start to finish if you have less than an i7 board.

Yet to see if I can export a 3d file to my slicing software??

Rod, It will run quite happily on an I5 [ all depends on the size of your data sets ]. Clock frequency is most important being as SE is a single threaded app. [ I think that holds true for all Mcad software] . . Rendering, now… that's a different ball game. Rendering in Keyshot… or in my case Vred is core hungry. It will take as much cores as you can give it. Same applies to FEA .

Barry – thanks. Just got there and took a simple file to Simplify 3d without a hitch.

I brought up a ‘virgin’ debian10 box + it downloaded ok – suspect it was the captcha that broke previous attempts – now to get it somewhere near an uptodate version of Wine and see what that makes of it.

Shhh. Don't tell my version that. I installed (in my ignorance) on Win8.1. It seems perfectly happy so far. Not that I've done much.

That said, if they really only want it installed on Win10 it's perfectly simple to detect the OS on installation (or even at the time of download) and refuse at that point.

I only said it's CERTIFIED to run on win 10. and no other Os. Certainly you would have ( as your install shows) a better chance of success on Win 8.1 than trying the same on Linux. I'm pleased you have it running on 8.1 but… The fact remains it is certified for 10.

                                      Cheers.

It might be worthwhile checking your Win 10 version.

System requirements state Win 10 Pro and note that Win 10 Home edition won't work.

Danny, I use the commercial version on 1 workstation [ Win 10 Pro ] and 1 with [ Win 10 Home ]. runs perfectly on either Os version. I have community edition on another machine [ Win 10 home ] and again runs perfectly. Win 10 home Not supported, simply means that any technical issues the user [ might ] encounter Tech support will not help. But… Take it from me it runs perfectly on 10 home, no issues.

It's exactly the same as Using Quadro GPU'S most [ all ] Professional Mcad software will specify Quadro Cards. even though the Ge Force versions will be fine. They just won't offer any tech support if using a non certified GPU. so it's exactly the same on Win 10 Pro / Home. So IF you are thinking of trying SE out and are using Win 10 home then go for it, you will be fine.

                                            Thanks Raymond.

I read the technical specs before attempting to download it and as my HP laptop only came with Win 10 I decided not to waste by time.

But if as you say, it works, then I might have another try because it does appear to be quite a useful program (even if one does has to trade details with Siemens to join their mailing list).

Danny, Go for it, you will be fine. Because it's full blown Professional Mcad software it is expected that it will be used in a Pro environment, Hence Quadro / Fire Pro Gpu's and Win 10 pro. when the reality is Win home/ Geforce or Radeon [ or wharever AMD 's latest ones are called ] SE operates on them just dandy.
