I bought a cheap tacho from e-bay along with a suitable transformer. Stuck the magnet to the spindle just below the gear with araldite and use one of the head top cover hole sto mount the sensor. Readout sits just under the e-stop button's panel.

Thanks Jason and Bob, gives me a starting point. How this has come about is because I am slotting large bronze screwheads and the slotting saw is not happy. So I upped the rpm and it was fine. So I felt I need some reference of the rpm of the cutter.

I will follow this up and see what I can do, Thank you.

Those chinese kits are simple cheap and easy to fit.

An alternative solution, if only the slitting saw speed wax of interest, might be to buy a cheap hand-held taco as that could be used elsewhere.

My X3 is cogged belt drive, not gears like Jasons. I can do nothing on top as the spindle can go downwards if I need Z drive facility.

I can perhaps place a sensor under the head and have a mark on a collar under the head, I wonder if it will get in the way there?

Perhaps i shall continue to fly by the seat of my pants regarding the cut.

You could stick the magnet onto the top of the pulley and mount the sensor in a hole drilled into the top cover.

Or do as NDIY suggests just use a hand held one for the odd occasion you want to know the speed.

on my sx2 I have a hole drilled in the drawbar cover for the sensor, and the neodium magnet just sticks to the drawbar, no glue.

Clive, I do not know how similar your X3 is to my little X1 mill but I have added a tacho, see:

                        http://mikesworkshop.weebly.com/mill-tachometer.html

The tacho unit was supplied with a hall efect sensor but the sensor was too large to fit in a convenient place so a made a simple optical reflective sensor which works well using a reflective strip on the spindle.
