The Seig X2 mill and its derivatives must be the most modified machine sold going by articles on the Internet. Other than fitting DROs mine was standard and was mostly OK for my needs and size of workshop, however the 'head drop' caused by the poor spring design started to irritate and I have just fitted a gas strut.

      What a difference!

I will not go into detail about the mod as it is well covered. Basically I copied the Little Machine Shop kit and used a strut from a Peugeot 106 bonnet.

I keep planning to fit a couple of pulleys to the roof and use a sash weight on a piece of rope. better than gas strut or torsion spring, as it is a constant force regardless of the position of the head.

Perhaps a bit low-tech for some

Can't do any phots just now but if you look at the following link you will find pictures of all the parts and fitting instructions. (Instructions are under 'Chris's Tips' after selecting the kit that suits your machine).

Unless you are using the mill as a bench drill as well the spring, whether gas or the original, is a waste of time. I just removed it for my CNC conversion.
