sieg X1 micro Mill

Hi All,

I have cnc’d my Sieg X1 micro mill and it is working well but Im not all that happy with the way the stepper is sticking out of the front.  At the extreme forward limit there is almost 12″ sticking out the front.

So my idea is to raise the column and drive from the rear.   To accomplish this I would have to produce raiser blocks but I also want to incorporate a plate extension to the Y axis so that the screw and bed are protected from swarf etc.

So my question is are ther any accurate drawings of the Sieg X1 mill so I can determine if my idea is feasable.  From my quick viewings there appears to be enough space at the edge of bolt holes for it to work but I am reluctant to strip down just to measure.

I don’t know the machine, but could you possibly come up from underneath and drive throgh a bevel gear or something? Just an idea to get things started. Ian S C

Not really as I have fitted ball screws and a bevel gear will introduce back lash.

The Sieg KX1 drives the Y axis from the rear not sure how they do this but it keeps the front of the machine clear.

My workshop is getting crowded and I have the added worry taht in moving an other machine I will damage the mill.

If no drawings materialize I will have to bite the bullet and attempt to measure myself and produce drawings.  This is not that easy as the castings have the usual casting slope to them.

i’m in the process of CNCing my X1. I have put the motor inboard and also used reduction pulleys

will take some pictures if your interested, have drawings etc

would attached picture but can’t work out how to, insert image doesn’t seem to work

Peter, John (M), I’m just starting planning my X1 conversion, would be most interested in seeing pictures of how you have done it please.  In particular, I’m looking at the Arc ballscrews which look like a tight squeeze, so any advice on how to fit them would be very useful!

Peter, John, have loads of photo;s and drawings, i’m still busy designing and converting my x1, its going to be a long term project dont get loads of time at it. this site isn’t very friendly so if you send me your email address i’ll send you a brief description of what i’m doing and photo’s / drawings. I have not went to ballscrews as this was a trial machine, i want to do the same to an x3, this was just a means to an end and a cheap way of testing out mach3 and steppers

Hi John,

I have fitted ballscrews to my X1 and as you say it is a bit of a squeeze especially for the X axis nut.

Not sure about fitting the Arc-Euro ballscrews as thay have a flange which is about 26mm high and will not go in.

The ballscrews I used are the RSW ones from Marchant Dice http://www.worldofcnc.com/products.asp?recnumber=69 the only problem with them is that they do not have wipers.  I have since found that the RSW type can come with wipers.

The other problem I had was that of machining the Y axis to take the ballnut fixing for the X axis as I only have the X1 mill, to that end I obtained a spare Y axis casting from the States.

I dont have any drawings or pictures, all done on the fly I’m afraid.

Biggest problem I had was in machining the ball screw ends and threading them ,baptism of fire was no exaggeration.
