Where do they get these people from? The chattering classes in London of course.

I have just listened in amazement to an item on sheds. The designers stressed the friendliness of rotating sheds, glass walls, rooftop installation etc. etc.

Not a mention of bikes let alone lathes, milling machines, not even where to park the mower.

Somewhat unfortunately, we are more and more being "ruled" by people with no practical experience. I have in mind:

          a) A heavy glass covering bowl with a 30mm deep x 30mm wide square glass moulded in top handle carefully arranged to slope away from the bowl. Hence your fingers promptly slipped off and to lift the bowl, one had to use both hands on opposite sides of the bowl itself. Had the slope of the handle been the other way, ie with a wide part away from the bowl, then it would have been satisfactory.

          b) A cast iron frying pan complete with solid cast iron handle cast in as one with the pan itself. Result – burned/scorched fingers. A descent design would have had one of: hollow thin metal handle, plastic handle, or a wood handle.

I do despair of the mentality of these people. And it's no good saying anything, after all," who are you to criticise me – I've been to design college."

          Regards,

          Peter G. Shaw

Not heard the program but did read an article a while ago on the exodus to sheds caused by people working from home.

The consensus was you had to leave home to do the mind change to say you were at work. Working from a spare room is fraught with interruptions and distractions. Many of these were little home from homes, insulated UpVC glazing and patio style doors and were essentially working environments as opposed to hobby / puttering about.

Taken in this theme I can see that people will want a decent working environment and if around London they can probably be well able to afford it seeing as they would probably earn in a month what most choo choo enthusiasts will nearly waste in a lifetime knowing just how tight they are……………

Please cut me some slack, John, my shed has double glazing! Two-off units, each 4' 6" wide by 2' 6" high.

Two house moves ago, I was helping a builder friend instal some uPVC double glazing. (It was to replace some aluminium double glazed units that had been installed in the wooden surrounds previously occupied by the original Critall single glazed frames. The wooden surrounds had subsequently gone 'carroty' .)

'Hey, Roger', says I, 'What happens to these ali-framed units then?'. 'Down the tip!' says Roger. Well, what would you have said next???

                Best regards,

                Swarf, Mostly!

There does seem to be some confusion between 'sheds' and 'summer houses' amongst some salesmen.

In fairness I think the metal handled pan or skillet is a traditional design that enables it to be put into the oven after initial preparation on the hob and I've actually been meaning to get one to use inside my wood stove. I have a welding glove by the stove already.

                    Bazyle,

Yep, welding or oven glove definitely needed.

The ribbed ones, however, do a perfect rib-eye.

After I built my small shed / workshop and kitted it out, The Management, a great gardener, declared it was so nice that she wanted one as well.

No sooner the word than the deed and she now has her own gardening shed with all her tools and clobber neatly racked and stashed. She's quite happy to sit on the step with a coffee and admire all her hortimecultural stuff. So she gets my vote as a proper Shed Lady.

John is dead right about the home workers shed. My mat Pat, headmaster of the local school has one for all his admin and planning tasks plus industrial scale home brewing. We've plucked geese in there too but the ambiance and appearance weren't much improved by cubic yards of goose feathers. You can drink redcurrant wine with furry down in it but it's not the pleasure it aught to be.

"'I've been to design college" A good point Peter! Which is exactly the problem!

They're specifically taught to reject standard practice. Does an Architect build a building? No, he designs it, and is then forced to give the headache of making that fantasy a reality to an engineer who seeks compromise.

When I say Engineer, I don't mean the guy that comes out to fix your boiler, or diagnose your car – don't even get me started on that…….

I wouldn't waste good shed space on using it as an office. I could get a nice shaper into that gap.

Currently using what was the dining table to work from. The other dining table has a boring head on it among other things = I must get that extension shed finished.

Eugene – 5/10 for spelling. Could try harder. wink

                            Bazyle,

Shows how much cooking I do as I didn't know that. Neither does my wife and all she uses it for is as a frying pan. Mind you, she does buy stuff to do things with, "because I like it", rather than any practical consideration. This is why we have a number of small pans which are far too small for the smallest electric hotplate which means that large amounts of heat get wasted.

                            Cheers,

                            Peter G. Shaw

My first shed was a large coal bunker, with a wife and 3 daughters I felt it was prudent to have somewhere I could retire to at least once a month and quite often more!!! Currently I have 3 sheds I can retreat to relatively undisturbed —Mick

Mmmmn university, the place that young people are indoctrinated to change the world as we know it! Yet when they leave they have no idea how to go about it, or the consequence of the changes they are implementing!

You simply can not beat practical experience, I know I have tried ex students in my company only to be disappointed and remove them!

I had one of those frying pans , with a cast handle, oven proof yes but not user friendly. I cut off the cast handle leaving a stub about an inch long. I cut a piece of pipe about 8" long that slips over the stub handle. A shortened nail drilled through and peened over fastens the new handle on. It remains cool when the pan is on the stove. It can still be used in the oven.

I was back at college as a mature student , finishing about three years ago. Having been at the same college previously as an apprentice for block release, i knew most of the toolmaking and fitting lecturers. This was handy as if i wanted to do a job or use one of the machines it was only a matter of asking.

While studying manufacturing engineering i was down in the college workshop using the J&S surface grinder ( i want one !), in this workshop there are a dozen new tos lathes, and a dozen milling machines. A fellow student came down to see what i was doing, and asked (bearing in mind that less than a year later he would be a qualified engineer) what on earth these machines were. He couldn't tell a lathe from a mill and had no idea what they did !
