      Hi,

I am currently building the 2" Shand Mason to Edgar Wesbury's design. I am making gland nuts of the round type with 6 grooves around the circumference. These are 1/2 " and 3/8" dia. Obviously they need a 'C' spanner or Hook spanner to tighten them. Does anyone know of an easy way to make such spanners.

      Thanks in anticipation John

          Have a look at this:

This could be easily scaled down to suit your application.

Micrometer adjusting spanners work very well for me or when the glands are hard to get at a small flat blades screwdriver can be useful.

If you want to make something that cut a narrow strip off some 20g or 1mm steel sheet. Hacksaw a slot across the end of some 3/8" rod. put one end of the strip into the slot and wrap it 1/3rd way around the rod then bend back at a suitable angle to make the head. Repeat with a 1/2" rod. The glands don't need a lot of force so mild steel will do but you could use annealed spring steel if you wanted.

Or fully unscrew the spindle and use the micrometer itself devil

That sounds like something Chuck would do

Cut out the body of the spanner and fit metal pegs that are just a TINY bit smaller than the body, silver soldered in place. The round bits were cut out with a step drill and then filed to shape by eye.

I'm boggled! A mini-lathe with the plastic bearing cover and gear spacer replaced by polished metal items!

The owner of the toolandmods website is Jose Menezes. He is a Portuguese, a perfectionist and a professional photographer. His site was very active until about 3 years ago. Since then nothing seems to have been added.

Jose also hosts all the drawings prepared by Ralph Patterson of the modification he made to his minilathe. This is a useful resource.
