Earlier this evening I heard multiple loud rumbles, that set off the dogs and worried my daughter. i was convinced it was lightning but no flashes and a check showed the nearest lightning is in Cornwall.

Anyway every so often a repeated short series of very loud and fairly distant explosions. My wife says she saw faint flashes to the North east.

My guess is that the cooling towers at Willington Power Station are being demolished. Planning permission for a new power station was given in 2011 and the owner's website says the towers will probably come down.

I can understand that they don't want spectators but it would be nice to be warned even though we are about 8 miles away. they brought down several that were about a mile from us in the middle of the night years ago and it was like an earthquake (actually worse than the one earthquake I was woken up by!)

Could they have been supersonic bangs?

Eventually found something saying Willington would be demolished on 1 September, they must have put it back two days.

Perhaps you could take some of the aftermath, Neil.

I suspect there won't be much to look at but I do plan to drive past for a butcher's.

I'm glad Derbyshire popped up in the post as i've been checking the village next to me, Willington, for a derelict power station laugh
