Seig C1 Lathe

I’m sorry if this has been done before but I have tried a search in the forums and had no results.

 

Is the Seig C1 as sold by Arc Eurotrade any good?  I was thinking of purchasing a small lathe to complement my workshop, What do others think of this machine? Is it any good for small, lightweight work?  Any other suggestions apart from the Seig.  Price is important as I would only use it occasionally

 

Any comments appreciated as I haven’t seen one myself.

I cannot help much with your question, but I would like to take this opportunity to drop a little stone off my heart – especially so after reading your posting about arbors.

Why, oh why, insist some (many!) Brits and also Americans to call a Sieg a Seig, but never, never call a Myford a Mofyrd or a Southbend a Seuthbond???

Mistype once is a typo,  getting a couple of letters roundabout is also a typo.  Using a wrong (albeit similar) word is an error of language.

A C1, the Chester variety, was my first lathe 4 years ago as a 50th birthday present to myself along with an X1 mill.

 

If you can strip clean and adjust it they are not a bad little lathe. The topslide is a pita and I use small qctp in place of the original boat holder.

 

I have done all the motion, wheels, pistons, cylinders etc for a Rob Roy on mine and it runs on air as of last week!

 

Don’t expect to hold half a thou but then it isn’t a Cowells but then it isn’t that price either.

 

I have a Boxford AUD and a Cowells ME 90 as well now but still use the C1 when the job suits – I like the quitness, easy speed control and I must admit I have a lot more tooling for it than for the Cowells – wonder why?

I have a Boxford Myself and have done no end of work of all size and shape on that but thought I would treat myself to a second lathe for small, easy to set up components.  The C1 looks good value for money (and the tooling seems not a bad price either), especially the latest offer from Arc Eurotrade at £261.00.  As you say it’s not a Cowells but…………

 

I think that after your posting I may well pop up to A E and have a closer look. I’m getting tempted .

Probably because ie and ei is the most troublesome letter pair in teh English Language. We even have a rhyme “I before E except after C”.

 

Of course, I have always had enormous trouble with this (look at how I spell my name) to the point of compiling a long list of the exceptions when I was at school!

 

I still struggle – to be honest looking at your post I’m still not sure which is right…

I shouldn’t have gone to visit Arc Eurotrade (about 20 mins from me by road).  I’m now the proud owner of a Sieg (note Hansrudolf )  C1 Arc version.

 

Drat.

 

Now I have to tell the missus!!! .  Perhaps I’ll do what she does, put it away for a couple of months then when she sees it I just  say nonchalantly ‘Oh I’ve had it ages’
