I am interested in making up an in-line water feed check valve for a model locomotive and would be interested to hear if anyone can suggest some likely generic designs in 3.5” or 5” gauge which may have been published in the past.  Martin Evans in his book “The Model Steam Locomotive” gives details for one such valve for use in the vertical position but I am looking for a design suitable for use  in the horizontal position.  Any help and assistance would be much appreciated.

Could be a bit difficult if you do not use a light spring (stainless or bronze)IMG_3604, how about the valve body vertical with the threaded unions at right angles one at the top and one at the bottom?. sorry about the crap image but I’m sure you get the idea.Should be in on the left and out on the right

The reason for the enquiry is that I would like to be able to make use of one of the wash out bushes located at the bottom of the boiler backhead which for space reasons lend itself to a horizontal fitting.

This will probably be considered a cheap/tasteless suggestion, but:

Such valves are common in automobile windscreen-washer systems

… you may do well to investigate these for design features and spring rates.

If you have the room for a horizontal valve surely there will be room for a normal 90 degree valve screwed direct into the washout bush.

Possibly not the best to squirt cold water into the hot end of the boiler

<p style=”text-align: left;”> On the contrary I would have thought that the base of the backhead was a relatively safe place for the injection of water and certainly not the hottest part of the boiler but I might be wrong.</p>

The bottom of inner plate is actually in contact with the burning coal, so it’s not going to be cool. Just above that it is very close to the incandescent firebed. Full size practice was to squirt it in at the front, just behind the front tube plate, or top feed via internal trays to precipitate the scale where it could be removed relatively easily. Having said that, lots of models put it in at the backhead, and I haven’t heard of any problems

Perhaps I should have made clear that water input via the backhead bush is only intended as a backup supply via the tender hand pump, the primary source of supply being from a couple of top feed injectors.
