A long time ago I bought several packs of Swiss-Made piercing saw blades from Chronos. They came in bundles bound by soft iron wire and had random thicknesses and tooth pitch. I still have a few left and often wonder what make they were.

The Wilding castle clock I was making at the time had the anchor cut from an annealed file and surprisingly I cut it from the same blade that had cut out all the wheel crossings. It also cut the other steel parts and I think for that whole clock I only used four or five blades.

It often occurred to me whether these would work in my Poolwood scroll saw with the clamps it came with for pinless blades. Maybe the speed is too high compared to the steady stroke of a piercing saw. Also the full length of the blade isn’t used so wear would be concentrated in the middle few centimetres.

I think you are absolutely right Mick about the powered saw only using a short piece of the blade and when doing by hand you use a longer stroke which equals longer life.

Are you cutting on the downward stroke ?

To be honest, I have no idea. The blades are so fine that I cannot tell which way around the teeth are pointing.

          James.

GENTLY stroking the blade with a finger will soon tell you

The obvious thing to do….. and I never considered it. I have just tried and can easily feel the difference. Thank you.

Part of the reason for the number of blades that I have broken is my hamfistedness. I suspect some blades were upside down as well. Also,  I made a  pair of blade clamps, cutting them out of aluminium by hand. I strongly suspect that they are not holding the blade straight and are putting a twist in them. I have a pair of Axminster clamps on the way. Fingers crossed.
