Cold fingers and a cold brain scrapped three hours of work today. Only a small thing I guess. II'll start number three next week. What's your most expensive DIY scrap job?

Don't know about expensive, but when I was restoring a Stuart S 6, I was just about to take the last cut on the new crankshaft, mounted between centers, didn't check what I was doing, and caught the corner of the offset peice at the tail stock end with the corner of the four way tool post, one bent crank shaft. Made another one the next day. Its almost enough to make one say bother. Ian S C

Maybe I haven't been doing this long enough or maybe I'm just lucky but my mistakes so far (and there have been a few) haven't cost me a great deal in financial terms. What gets my goat is the investment in time and care that disappears, usually in a split second, to be followed often with the question "What on earth did I do that for?".

On my current project I am actually retaining the spoilt bits as a kind of reminder to take more care instead of my usual practice of binning them straight away.

All part of the joys of model engineering I guess.

I spend very little time making scrap.

On the other hand I spend a lot of time modifying parts. wink

I'v kept the bent crankshaft, I think i'll get a shaft with one end about an inch long to the bend, I'll just have to design an engine to fit it. Ian S C

Making scrap is as John says really product development – you just don't have a use for that part at the moment. Also have you found that it is almost impossible to make the same 'developed' part again. Geoff

The base plate of my home made filing machine looks like a machine gun has had a go at it

…It does make it a bit lighter though, with no loss of strength…urgh

There is no such thing as scrap. They are parts waiting for a use, or at the very least recycled material. That broken parting blade will come in oneday.

Hello chaps———–just a "Thank-you" for starting this thread— it's helped me get some perspective back into my hobby—and a few chuckles as well, having seen that it's not just me that asks "Why did I do that then ??"———- usually it's the cats' fault anyway !!smiley

An evening in the workshop; most of the above incidents have happened; a 12BA tap has broken in a blind hole in a visible part of the project and the back of my hand has had a gash from the 4 way toolpost.

Only one way forward. Shut the door and go indoors. On arrival my dear wife has a big pile of ironing to do; seeing me she says "All right for you, enjoying yourself out there!"

Machining the cylinder for a 1 1/2 scale Allchin traction engine. Put my initial datum mark on the wrong end of the casting so set out and machined the whole thing back-to-front. Didn't notice until I went to fit the valve chest! Resisted the urge to throw it through the window and now use it as a book end.
