…Too hot, expanding aluminium alloy cross slide, can't take the heat, resulting in abnormal distortion? What do you guys think?

From my observations, I think that thermal expansion is a real thing. The hotter the weather gets, the longer the girls' legs become.

As far as today's heat is concerned, I had to walk home at about four o'clock from the charity shop where I do PAT testing. I was fine for a while, then suddenly I came over all faint. By sheer chance I was outside an air-conditioned ice-cream parlour at the time, so it all turned out well in the end.

Sounds as if your toolposts rather than temperature are distorting the crosslide. I have the same problem with a long vice on the table of my D-W mill. When I grip a job in the vice the X slide movement goes stiff whatever the temperature. Not helped by the skinny vice base and the unusual tee slot arrangement of the mill – it reduces the longitudinal stiffness of the table compared to the conventional arrangement. If I'm after accuracy I mount the job on an angle plate using G clamps.

I have been cleaning up part of my garage to make room for a motorcycle lifting stand I have ordered. One trip to the tip so far. If it stays this hot, I might not get the grass in the back garden cut, shame, I get charged £45 a season for fortnightly green waste collections whether I fill the bin or not. It did creep up to 36C during the afternoon.

I'm quite lucky, I have a little pond in the back garden to keep cool in.

Don't forget your electric motors and especially motor control boards don't like the heat either. If you must run things try to do so for half the usual time. This applies to lathes, grinders, DVDs, washing machines, all of it.

125mtrs above sea level up on the North downs. 35.7c at 1600hrs.

Dog in the hall on the parquet floor slept most of the day. Me, sat in the living room with the fan.

In the bedroom now 30c, just put the fan on to cool it a bit. The front of the house is in the full Sun from midday.

Around 32% RH at 25.5C indoors this evening here in Derbyshire – earlier around 24% at 32C outdoors. Daughter in London reports 44% at 27.5C indoors, so not too bad.

For once I'm pleased to have a semi-subterranean workshop (cellar of house on steep gradient) – 19.5C down there! That's the hottest it's ever been without heating I think -normally sits at 12-14C throughout the year.

                      Robin.

Had to go from Leeds to Barnsley to pick up my new Ham radio. 33 in the van & A/C don't work. Felt like a 100 mile journey. But worth it in the end. A few beers have cooled me down nicely now though. Tomorrow even hotter it says.

So humankind has hugely increased the CO2 in the atmosphere, the scientists say this will make the climate heat up, measurements show it is heating up. It takes a special kind of thinking to deny climate change.

I bet this thread gets blocked any time now!

Well actually i remember as a child getting terribly sunburned at the open air swimming baths. Only a while ago,,, 60yrs or so. So not sure about the climate thingy. Just accept it's hot for a few days. Read not too deep. They never said anything back then that we are all doomed. Keep smiling guys & have a cold one.

In 1976 where I was working, the temp peaked at 112F one day. I could manage about 20 mins working at a time before leaving the room, sluicing my head and downing more fluids. That was when I promised myself that when I had my own shop it'd have aircon.
When I first went solo money was too tight and the best I could manage was to fill a plastic bag in a cat basket with water and make myself a huge ice-cube to hug between consultations but as business expanded the whole place got fitted with air-source heat pumps. So nice to work like that that I installed one at home.
Retired and moved here and one of the first things we did was install a/c in the living room and main bedroom. It often saves firing up central heating when it’s just a short chill period and on days like today it's luxury..
They aren't that expensive and less so if one is able to self-install (I didn't). Split systems come pre-gassed and essentially mount a unit indoors, place the outside unit, drill a hole for the hose and plug in plus a power supply assuming house shape permits simplicity.
I did have some errands to run yesterday but left my car in 'dog mode' for the short time it was parked which keeps the a/c running.

Spent yesterday afternoon delivering medication, I wear a baseball cap which I soaked in cold water twice during the afternoon and kept my head cool, I also consumed 2.5 litres of ice cold water, the thermometer at home peaked at 37Deg C, same routine again today and tomorrow..

You also require a suitable vacuum pump to evacuate the system & remove moisture before releasing the gas.

37 C near York yesterday, but the wheezing, rattling floor standing air con unit in my "office" (half a Portacabin) at work kept the temeprature to a bearable 27C & the car aircon made the journey home comfortable.

I have a ceiling fan in the bedroom, so last night was also comfortable. It was 21 C at 6.30am this morning as I left for work.

Worst temps I have had to work in was in Dubai in July – 48 C with very high humidity. The factory was supposedly air conditioned, but the units were mounted along one wall & I was was working next to the opposite wall, sheilded by the lathe I was working on. I ended up fashioning a "Rambo" style bandana from rolled up paper towel to stop perspiration running into my eyes & religeously drank 2 cups of water from the chiller every hour. Still I was better off than the works maintenance fitter, who had to visit the Saudi subsidiary works – 55 C & no air con there. Then, after a 12 hour day, I returned to hotel room chilled to 16 C & had to request it be warmed up ! Ended up with chest problems after a fornight of that regime.

Some report stated that women's workplaces are best at 24C (21C for men). So she's only 3degs over at the mo'….

The trouble with lizard people is that when the temp goes up they just bask… which explains British historic shovel leaning.

I spent 12 months in what used to be Trucial Oman but is now United Arab Emirates, stationed at a place called Sharjah, was there in 67, one day in August we recorded a temperature of 128 F which converts to 53.3 C. Looking back now I can’t believe that I worked outside all day in those temperatures servicing aircraft, we only wore a pair of shorts and desert boots, probably accounts for the skin cancer that I suffered. Temperature here on the Sussex Coast yesterday was 35 C outside and in the house we registered 28C, house faces due south so in the sun all day, my solar panels also face due south so generating about 26 kWh a day and with 12 kWh battery storage in this heatwave we are actually self sufficient on electricity not having to draw any from the Grid whilst the sun shines, wish the sun shone all year round like this and my energy bills would be zero, wouldn’t be able to stand the heat for that long though. Isn't this country a strange place. People (including myself), spend large sums of money, to go abroad and spend time in temperatures like this. When we get it for free, every body moans. OMG it's so hot, the roads are melting, we're having power cuts and the internet keeps dropping out, etc, etc.

In the winter we only need a few millimeters of snow and the country grind to a halt. Tomorrow we are going to get organised. Famous last words.

I still think 1976 was hotter, and it just seemed to go on forever

The last few days sure have been scorchy but even this AM it's cloudy and pleasant

The roads melted in 76, I live a mile up the road from where I lived back then and every day was non stop blazing sunshine from dawn to dusk, it was fabulous for a kid on his school holidays but the water situation became terrible, especially down south, fish were dying all over the place

I've waited 40 years for a half decent summer and this is a pretty good one

It was 18C in the house when I got up this morning. Freezing! But still had the ceiling fans going on low speed because it was 80 per cent humidity. It's the dead of winter here in the wet tropics in North Queensland. Only got up to 25C today but a lovely 65 per cent humidity and sunny and clear so perfect shed or gardening weather. Too bad I am stuck on the couch recovering from minor surgery!

OUr summer weather (about 7 months per year) is always 30 to 35C max and 25C overnight, but the real killer is the 90 per cent and upwards humidity that goes with it. Plus the strength of the tropical sun when you are directly in it.  I can't function outside in it for more than a few minutes. So the shed is now fully insulated, walls and roof, and 7kW split aircon system installed. Before that it would be 40C in the (tin) shed in summer so it was abandoned from before Christmas til after Easter. Now it costs me a dollar a day for electricity for shed air conditioning through the summer. Best money I ever spent!

Keep your fluids up  and don't go out in the midday sun. In other words, sit in the shade and drink beer. wink

What kind of humidity levels are you chaps getting at these temperatures?

Good question – humidity determines how hot it feels. High temperature and high humidity together are much more uncomfortable.

The humidity level here in the West of England is highly variable. Bristol is expected to range between 29% and 81% today. I expect to be able to sweat freely during the highest temperatures around midday . It won't be too bad if I stay in the shade and don't do physical work, but will probably have an uncomfortable sticky night.

In the West of England there's a helpful breeze but at 9:30am I'm already uncomfortably hot compared with yesterday.

Not normal for Bristol to be hotter than Los Angeles, and London is expected to get a lot hotter than LA today. Part of the problem is most UK infrastructure isn't set up to deal with unusual severe weather. Until recent times, high temperatures have been unusual so we keep cool by opening windows and taking our clothes off. Not everyone suffers. Wonderful weather if you can relax in an open garden with trees and a pool, deadly if you're stuck in a crowded city centre Old Folks Home with giant sealed south facing windows and lots of electrically lit corridors and rooms. Or even an ordinary town house that catches the sun and is surrounded by tarmac and other homes and cars belching out heat.

Went round the world 5 times as a lad and the two worst places I was ever in for humidity were Sudan and London, and that was early 80's London

Must be a nightmare there ATM

edit: The city traffic pollution reduction stuff will help a bit I suppose

I grew up in Malaysia in the 50’s, temperature there was 90F every day, so close to the equator seasons didn’t vary much unless it was Monsoon and then it would rain every day about four o’clock in the afternoon, and boy did it rain, absolutely torrential but soon dried up afterwards, could be quite humid though. Learnt how to cope with high temperatures then because life just carried on, no closing schools cause it got too hot, we just got on with life. Dave W
