..our phone is on permanent answer phone

You obviously don't have a spouse for whom it is physically impossible to ignore a ringing phone.

        Bandersnatch,

Nor have I; my wonderful wife sadly pegged it from Sepsis and many other complications of Diabetes, sometime ago. I was always under pressure to answer the phone or the doorbell. I often ignore doorstep callers if not expecting actual deliveries known callers. I refer to my prev. post regarding phone. Got caught out the other week, went to door expecting Amazon delivery but confronted by 2 giggling teenage girls door knocking for Caroline Lucas for the Green Party, here in Brighton. [I wouldn't vote for them but she did deserve votes for effort. Hers was the first and last leaflets in my letterbox as well as those callers. Only 1 leaflet each from 2 other parties and neither were Conservative and no other party bothered with door knocking in this part of Brighton Pavillion constituency. Guess what I think of them all. And I no longer vote on mere promises.]

To get back to topic of scallywags, landline phone nice and quiet these days! My mobile always switched off unless I want to use it. Get complaints about being uncontactable but I remind whingers of who pays the bill. Just leave message and I'll call back, which I do.

Further to my previous posting regarding "Loveenergysavings.com."

They are based in Bolton phone no. 01204 866054.

It is entirely possible that is a respectable organisation but the person and outfit that he represents could be something different, especially as he was using various phone numbers with an area code of 0203, whatever that is.My thoughts are that my frequent caller was an imposter claiming to work for L E S. Funny how Martin Lewis mentions a number of comparison sites but not that one. I wonder why?

All dead and buried now and he never got the chance to obtain Bank details from me

As I often say, "if in doubt, chuck it out."

Maybe I have misread/misunderstood some of the responses on this thread, but it appears that a phone call is answered and the unconfirmed ID caller instructs the recipient to "press 1" … and they do just that!!! Am I misreading something here?

              Extremely concerned!

                Hi Bill

No you didn't misread the post, someone did press 1 as requested, must have had a very serious senior moment especially considering this topic gets aired fairly often on this forum.

About 6 years ago I ripped my home phone clean out of the wall and threw it out of the window! I was up a ladder painting and the scammers caught me in a bad mood.

                  Problem solved.

I have a mobile, who's number I only share with friends. When filling in online forms I make a number up.

I don't have anymore scam calls.

                  Steve.

Sometimes, some legitimate sites INSIST on a Mobile number. Most seem to be quite happy with a string of zeros. Those that aren't will accept 079 followed by zeros.

On the fairly rare occasions that the mobile is switched on, there are no scam messages. Cold callers on the landline get dumped, if i remember the number as a scammer, (0203 seems a popular code ) and others, if believable, or actually speak, are reported to TPS.

One lady claimed that my number was "out there" and was not on the list. She got reported just the same!

Instead of using fake phone numbers on websites why not choose a real number? The BBC, TPS helpline or a gov agency perhaps. Other options might be estate agencies, banks or whatever annoyed you most recently…

I had a scammer the other day who asked about my motor accident which was not my fault. That's unbeliveable I said, how did you know I'd had an accident, it's only just happened, I'm still in the car waiting for the paramedics to arrive I said. She changed tack, and asked about any accidents I'd had in the past 50 years – well, it sounded like 50 years but could have been just 5. How did you know I'd been driving for over 50 years I asked, click, brrrrr…….

And another caller blocked. If I don't recognise a number I don't answer it and if the same or a very similar number comes up again, usually from a place where I know nobody or do business with nobody, then that gets blocked.

Senior management is only too keen to answer the phone even when it's a strange number, or call them back if they've rung off. I try and put her off doing that saying if they really want to talk to you they will call back. Let them pay for the call. If I do get a caller who gets through I decline from saying anything and just put the phone down "off the hook" for ten minutes or more.

What I do tell my family is, if a stranger phones and asks is that whoeversname they are calling, is that them, NOT to say yes, as they record that and the use that recording to claim that they authorised the purchase of whatever overpriced scam item they are flogging, which you will never receive anyway.
