      Hi all

Having recently bought a 21year old toyota diesel hiace I am looking to treat the underbody, the options seem numerous including laser rust treatment, wire wheel, wax oil, krust (hammerite), cosmolene, zinc paint etc.

What is the most cost effective that will last say 3-5years and not necessarily brand name products?

Also is it worth using ht paint on exhaust manifold, cat and engine?

first take it up the garage and jet wash as much as you can. then home to wire brush and scraper. you will get very dirty and wonder why you started. you will then need to get the welder out. as for paint what ever you chose someone will say its good someone will say its bad. best of luck i wish you all the best.

Tetrosyl Tetra Schutz underseal and stone chip would be my choice. Note Tetroseal is a different product. No idea on that one.

Quite a lot of folk in the Landrover world use a lanolin spray these days, though I’ve not tried it myself; I’ve been using ACF50 & Corrosion block, but they are an annual treatment
You might do well to contact Buzzweld, who started out as a specialist in Landrover rustproofing, and now serves a wider audience.

Thanks guys, what about products for aluminium surfaces such as engine rocker covers?

Also high temperature iron surfaces what can I prime them with?

Motorex 645, or whatever the new name is, which seems to vary by the year as it gets upgraded/re-formulated.

At 21 years old it already has the rust bug. Lots of scrapping etc will clean the surface but not inside the chassis where the main rot is hiding. On my 1996 Nissan Patrol I just wirebrush clean and spray with Jenolite antirust every couple of years. I also squirt EP30 hydraulic oil into the chassis with a log flexible nozzle where ever there is a hole. Seems to work OK for the old girl. But no doubt there are places I could not get to. Luckily no major issues so far.
