Rust and camphor

I have just been reading some of the posts on an old yahoo group where one bloke prevents rust in enclosed spaces in his workshop by placing solid camphor in tool boxes cupboards etc.

Fortunately I don't have a rust problem but for them as do this might be of interest.

If YOU have tried this does it work or is it just a load of mothballs?

Well you definitely wont get moths.

Mothballs normally consist of napthalene.

So It is naphtalene and not natural camphor that prevents rust?

Seems hard to find naphtalene moth balls as the trend now is cedar, any idea where I can find naphalene as this could be useful for me.

An added bonus of using camphor is that it was used as a fumigant during outbreaks of the Black Death , I wonder if it would work with——— oh well, just a thought.

I'd put my money on VPI or VCI paper. Moths don't like Camphor or Naphthalene because of the smell, and many humans don't care for Naphthalene either. On top of that I'm not sure modern mothballs contain Naphthalene. Some sort of insecticide / repellent mixture that's unlikely to have any rust proofing properties.

Naphthalene vaporises slowly and leaves an oily layer on everything nearby, so it does work. But I doubt it's as effective as a designed VPI/VCI product, which can be had with a MIL-SPEC. When the military mothball tanks, they don't mean it literally!

We just put a small slit in the cello and that's all, reminded Me to check mine as it's been 5-6 years since I looked at it. I will start putting a date on it.
