Rust?

I bought a vertical slide recently from another forum, described as below:-

"Swivelling vertical slide. In good working order with no wear in slides. Previous to my ownership it was in storage for a long time and has some minor rust pitting at the bottom although this does not affect its performance. Needs a bit of touching up on the paint side but otherwise a good bit of kit. Asking for offers around £60 due to condition."

When it arrived, everything was "solid" ( ie rusted solid). The two swivels were solid and heavily rusted, the slide was stuck and wouldn't move. I had to soak everything in WD 40 and it took some stout belts with a copper hammer before anything moved.

 

Am I being too picky/ expecting too much?

Oooops! caveat emptor springs to mind, at least you have got the parts moving, next step.. strip it all down…

No Mike, you're not

Quite simply; if your description is correct, then the seller mis-represented the condition. Unfortunately; assuming it was a private sale, you're unlikely to get anywhere …

Hi Mike, if this was on Ebay and even if it was a private seller you can get your money back. Open a dispute with Paypal if you are not happy.

Well folks,

I've already done the cleaning up (and repairs) but just wanted the views of others on the forum. I treated it as a bit of a project but it did take a good four hours hard graft! I think that it's a shame that some folks have very different views as to what "good working order" actually means. The swivels and slides obviously haven't moved for some time. hey-ho!  Perhaps a "Home Workshop" site is not the place it used to be for some sellers! (hint hint as to the whereabouts of the seller!)

If I were inclined to rob people by misrepresenting items for sale, then I'd probably chose an advertising medium where the demographic fitted the description of timid, doesn't like to complain, slightly naive etc. . . !

Did you misplace your trust in a good transaction just because the item was offered on what you perceive to be a 'friendly' website ?

Definitely not being too picky, you should have got something serviceable.

Many of us have been using Homeworkshop for years, before it was rescued by Sir John, and turned into its present form by Adam.

Back in the day, it was only used by "genuine" home engineering types, but since its renovation has become hugely popular and much more widely known. Sadly, it has attracted the attention of some who regard it as "ebay without charges".  Happily, these are still in the minority.

There is nothing to be done about this except to bear it in mind.

I would have contacted the seller to see how he reacted.

It's fairly easy to trust people in a "like-minded" forum. Mike trusted the description given by the seller. We here are trusting the description given by Mike (no offence Mike).

In both cases a picture would have been more satisfactory.

(In that respect, you should see what passes for "in excellent condition" on my local Craigslist Tools section along with a picture that clearly shows it to be nothing of the sort).

To be fair, the seller did send me two pictures by email but what they didn't show was the fact that the mating surfaces were full of solid rust and quite obviously hadn't moved for a very long time. I've taken the hit as the seller hasn't responded to my "observations" and will chalk it up to experience. I now have a working vertical slide and there doesn't appear to be much wear but it clearly wasn't as described. As said above caveat emptor. ( … and use Paypal, not a personal cheque!)
