For the convenience of Apple users … here’s an opinion from The Guardian:

In a few years time there will be no universal postal service. You will be able to send a letter via special delivery costing £7 at todays prices, if you are lucky. Much, much, more and unaffordable to anywhere remote or abroad.

Managed decline is the name of the game, and when there is nothing left, the relics (together with the debt) will be handed back for the taxpayer to look after.

And ditto for every other essential monopoly service.

I received a parcel yesterday (Wednesday) posted in Northern Ireland on Monday. I’m in mainland UK. It’s just dawned on me, if you have an important letter to send, put it in a box and send it as a parcel

Re Royal Mail just been reading the latest on mail delivery according the the BBC Ofcom suggested RM could cut deliveries down to 3 days  week, however RM have proposed cutting 2nd class to every other day and keeping 1st class deliveries at 6 day a week link (to BBC page)

So now Ofcom have shown they do not seem concerned about cutting our postal service.

I think Ofcon is concerned but has to face reality that results from reduced trade, and much of that reduction is due not only to people using the Internet but also to political forces beyond Ofcom’s control – such as the Post being broken into two and half of it sold to any old overseas spivs going; and to “opening it to competition” that dose not help the customers at all.

I would happily go to  3 days a week deliveries, as long as it was reliable. What we have now isn’t. I’ve had several important letters just disappear into a void .

As others have said, letting competition cherry pick the profitable stuff whilst forcing Royal Mail to delivery for the same price is the wilds of the Highlands as in suburbia was a big mistake.
