I've broached 8mm hex in 303 stainless, it took a lot of pressure, so much it took out the bearings in the tool after 20 parts.

So the results are in. It’s $815 for their cheapest model. And that’s before you’ve shipped and imported it to the uk. I don’t care how well it’s made – that’s overpriced

Holy cow that is very expensive BTW Hemingway do a kit for rotary broaching. The one I purchased from eBay had an undersized shank so was returned as 'not fit for purpose'

The Hemmingway item is only said to suit small polygons upto about 7mm AF nowhere near what the OP wants to do.

From most of the posts on this thread it seems others have only done small holes mostly in softer materials.

Perhaps the reason for others doing small holes in softer materials has something to do with the forum title MODEL Engineering, perhaps we should refer the OP to a full size engineering forum, he will still have to realise though that the protrusion or null point is critical regardless of the size of the broaching tool. Bigger broaching tools do bigger hexagons / squares and bigger forces are created and bigger prices for tools, seems that the cheapest tool is around about a grand in the UK, I will not comment further but there are many other ways to produce what he hopes to achieve by broaching.

                Sad to say, Daniel … I think it’s more like a reality-check.

It's long been said by Neil that the WORKSHOP in MEW is the main focus of the mag which is part of this forum so any size work has a place. Though the number of members working on larger hobby items may be limited there are many who also have a background in the engineering industry and can draw on that.

Also lets not forget those that like to build the bigger stuff like 6" traction engines where sizes are going to be a lot larger than those making 3.5" locos and stationary steam engines so even Model Engineering is not just small stuff.
