David,
I hope you are better.
I was reading part 5 of Roedean by LBSC (ME Vol 207 No 4412) and looking at the Cylinder Drawings I noticed ‘Ole Curley’ had decided to fit it with ‘piston valves’. Within the past year there was a ‘Letter to the Editor’ in ME on this problem. The gentleman who wrote it concerned with Hydraulics. He pointed out that in hydraulic control gear ,where piston valves were used, the cylinders were pierced with numerous small holes instead of the large steam passage. The valve spools were sealed with ‘O’ rings. I remember that you as Editor commented favourably on this idea.
Curley’s valves cylinders are 0.5” ( 12.7mm) inside diameter. If the holes were say 1/16” (1.6mm) diameter were drilled so that they would have 1/8” (3.2mm) between the centres when measured on the ID of the valve cylinder you could have 12 such holes in s single band of holes. The area of 1 row of such holes would be some 24 sq mm
May I suggest that when ‘Ole Curley’ describes the valve gear you reprint the gentleman’s letter
Rgds
