Can anyone tell me if the castings that used to be produced by Alyn Foundry are being made by anyone else?. The information I have is that they are now out of business, is this correct?
      Thanks

I did see a post on another forum about a year ago that one of the ME traders had bought all of Alyn Foundries patterns but have not heard or seen anything since. In the end I built this from scratch with a couple of Stuart flywheels.

WOW, thats a neat engine, is it made from home made castings or is it built up?
Thanks for the info on the chain

Its all fabricated with teh exception of the two 7″ flywheels which are available from Stuarts. Mechanically its based on a “Zero-six” engine, the plans for which were published in Model Engine Builder Magazine but I did not like the “bar stock” look so made a few alterations inspired by the look of the Galloway Hit & Miss engines.

Alyn Foundry ceased trading from April 2008 for various reasons.  Graham Corry still retains the patterns and drawings for the designs (although not all the designs were drawn up).

The business was/is up for sale, but the asking price was a bit unrealistic considering today’s economic climate.

As far as I know he has no stock of any castings for his engines.

I am particularly interested in this topic since I’ve acquired the estate of a master craftsman who recently passed away.  Included in his inventory was a partially completed R.L.E. engine (Serial #290).  I am missing the engineering drawings and a few pieces.  The engine base,  main frame, cylinder and water hopper are all there and mostly machined, as well as the two flywheels.  Although I am still carefully unpacking the shop boxes, but have not found the cylinder head, etc.

If anyone has suggestions of where I might obtain the engineering drawings or remaining castings, I’d be grateful.

                    Regards,

I think the build was covered in Engineering in Miniature, this would have had the drawing in it, you may be able to pick up back issues on e-bay or order them from the publishers. I’ve got the first one somewhere so will dig it out later and give you a date.

                        Hi Jason,

Info regarding the pub date would be greatly appreciated.  I have several back issues of EIM filed away.  I’ll also begin a search.

                          Hi There
                          Construction was in Model Engineer.
                          Probably by Stan Bray.
                          regards David

                            Hi David,

Thanks for your reply to my posting.   It is indeed unfortunate that the online index of Model Engineering is not currently available.  I will continue to search for the article by whatever means I can find.  I wish I could get my hands on a hard-copy of the engineering drawings.

                            Regards,

The R.L.E. was indeed a Stan Bray series, odd number issues of ME from 3909 to 3929 inclusive, which span volumes 167, 168 and 169, volume 167 being the second half of 1991.
There are several online sources for an index to ME, the one I use is at http://www.colinusher.info/

                                Cheers, Andy

I stand corrected, it was in ME starting No 3909 Vol 167 15th Nov-5th Dec 1991
