RIP Chris Moore

The passing of Chris Moore, Grandson of the Founder of Myford Engineering Limited aka Myford Lathes has been announced.

He was an interesting character, who once you got to know him was, in my experience, a straight forward human being, a friend of our hobby.

A sad loss.

I heard the sad news via the SMEE this morning. I'm sure they won't mind me sharing their message, which reads:

Chris Moore

It is with great regret that we have to pass on the sad news of the death of Chris Moore, a good friend of the Society and member since 1998.

Chris was the grandson of Cecil Moore who founded the Myford Engineering Company in 1934 which produced the popular Myford ML7 and Super 7 lathes that are still widely used by model engineers around the world.

Chris introduced Open Weekends at the Nottingham factory providing opportunities for enthusiasts to gather to enjoy displays and demonstrations and to discuss matters of mutual interest.

Chris sold me my Mk1 Super 7 (off the back of his Lorry) at Guildford MEX many years ago now. It was a just few hundred pounds and he told me that frankly it just wasn't economic for them to sort it out but that it might be worth my while to do so. I guess it was some kind of trade-in that he just wanted to shift.

Apart from some very obvious cosmetic defects, the backgear was badly chewed up and missing teeth (so he threw in a new spare one). Arriving home I found that the motor was completely seized (it was absolutely full of very fine dust) and that the clutch rattled badly and simply wouldn't engage. The top-slide had a huge lump gouged out of it and looked really ugly but it was still usable. The lathe turned slightly convex (not concave) – and still does so it certainly can be described as "somewhat worn".

The clutch was repaired, the motor dissembled and cleaned and eventually (about eight years later) a much prettier top-slide was found on eBay. I haven't gotten around to doing anything serious about the wear yet as I kind of know it's little foibles now and can mostly manage around them for my level of work. However, I've never regretted that purchase and I have had my moneys worth many times over.

Whenever I saw Chris on the Myford stand, I always used to smile although I don't think he remembered me, as I'm sure he'd sold hundreds of lathes over the years (most of them much better ones than mine, of that I'm certain).

But using my Myford this evening – I remembered him kindly.
