Request of Help With Stuart Model 800

Hello,

I’m a long-time reader but first time poster. After a long wait, I am finally the happy owner of a Stuart Model 800 I/C engine. There are several things I am curious about in the case of my particular engine.

-First, the configuration of the ignition system is different to what I have see on all of the other 800’s I have found on YouTube and other sources. Does the system on mine in the photos below look like one of the options available from Stuart or could it be a separately sourced solution?
– Also, mine has a cast aluminum carburetor on it, whereas in all other 800 engines I have seen, this carburetor is not used.
– And third and lastly, I have not been able to determine when Stuart ceased producing these model 800 S. If anyone has inside to that I would be most appreciative as well.

Welcome to the forum, that looks a nicely turned out engine.

The carb looks to be from the Stuart Lightweight which was a 30cc two stroke available in water or air cooled versions. This is a pic of the carb on my lighweight replica and also one of an original casting .

The instructions that I have seem to suggest that there were two options for the ignition but the drawings only seem to show one which was mounted on the two short studs that can be seen just above your ignition contacts.

As bad luck would have it, the (only) part that was damaged in shipping the engine to me was the carb – broken into three pieces. Assuming tbere are no longer any spare or replica parts for these, I will have it bonded then welded back together.

I built my carb from scratch, have a read of this post and my following one to see how to do it.

The carb is not really right as it is made for petrol, the engine was originally intended to run on propane hence the English use of "gas engine" and not the American one meaning gasolene.

Probably, originally it would have run on coal gas, as this was universal in the UK, and NZ (?) Australia. Used for household heating, lighting and cooking.

The old Stuart instructions give all the details for running it on propane anf give that as the prefered fuel type, though could probably have run from mains gas too

If you call Stuart Turner themselves, I am fairly certain that they will be able to tell you when it was last produced. They seem to have kept a lot of old records and drawings.

I spoke to Stuarts at last years GDSF and asked if they were going reintroduce this I/C engine to their line. The answer was maybe one day . I was curious as I have a carb casting and finished aircooled cylinder somewhere in the workshop.

Hugh, are you refering to teh 800 or the lightweight? I have not seen an aircooled 800

Jason I understand the use of bottled gas over resent years, I was thinking of when these motors were first introduced in the 1930s, when either coal gas or acetylene would have been the gasses available.

Hi Jason,

I did not read the OP properly . Yes it was the lightweight i was referring to. However the carb casting looks the same. If it helps the 800 is not in the 61 cat. The only other I/C is a 150cc Sandhurst in the cat.

Sorry to be a bit dense, but when you mention 61 cat, is that a 1961 Stuart catalog?

Is that because the 800 was discontinued earlier?
