When I was a boy Halifax wasn't a good good place to live, it's nicer now!

While Halifax today is less industrially polluted than your picture, I'm not sure it is necessarily "nicer".

At the time of your picture I am pretty certain I could have walked around any area of the town safely – not so now, as there are areas it is not wise for a person of my ethnicity to walk around in daylight.

Not somewhare I particularly choose to visit & I only live around 8 miles away. Not that Huddersfield is that much better, but both are a long way ahead of Bradford. Despite many years of "initiatives", none of these towns have really recovered from the loss the industries that caused their expansion in Victorian times.

Careful when you knock Bradford Nigel. It's about to become the "City of culture"surprise

But yes, I agree and have lived here for more than seventy years, but it wasn't all bad.

          Regards Ian.

As a son of neighbouring Leeds, I can confirm that the nearest Bradford comes to culture is the yogurt counter in Morrisons

It's sad when old stuff goes, but I think it unwise to view the past through rose-tinted glasses.

How many chimneys in this photograph of Halifax? Most of them demolished during my lifetime. When I was a boy Halifax wasn't a good good place to live, it's nicer now!

Unfortunately, the pollution has moved to China were it is much, much worse…

That's true, Dave. We've exported our dirty work to China, and left them with the problem to sort out.

They've got around 400 million smokers plus 4,000,000,000 tons of coal being burned a year plus every horrible chemical industry process you can imagine

I hope their NHS has plenty hospital beds available, about 100 million should do it
