I use a Record number 0 vice (2 1/2" jaw size) for much of my modelling and use fibregrip jaws – Irwin I think was the manufacturer. I'm on my last set of the fibregrips and cannot find anybody that sells them to suit the 2 1/2" jaw size.

Anybody know of a supplier ?

You need to ask Google for Record Imp vice jaws.

It's a bit late (and cold) to check in my shed, but I think No. 0 is 2 -1/2 ins wide, Imp is 2-1/4 ins.

I bought a 3 inch pair and milled them down to size. They were Warco I think, and the magnets weren’t in the milling zone.

Chronos keep a good range I do not know if they go down to 2 1/2” though (long time since I bought any).

I've tried E bay, googled to death and all my usual suppliers – no joy. Seems 2 1/2" is no longer made.

I rather like the fibregrip ones with steel frames that wrap around the jaws and stay in place.

I think I'll have to get bigger ones and try to cut down or just use the fibre material and rivet to an old set, however the old steel frames are getting a little worn !

                      Partial thread hi-jack, sorry!

Where can one obtain the red fibre material in thicknesses suitable for vice jaws? All I've found is quite thin. I have some Draper soft jaws (aluminium extrusions) faced with a soft rubbery material that are pretty much useless, but could be refaced with fibre if I could find some thick enough, say 1/4".

                      Thanks,

                      Rob

Can't find the fibre material but would imagine that HDPE sheet would be good.

                            Rob,

No idea where to buy the material but if your vice is fairly standard Record type etc, then the Fibre grip soft jaws would be a good option if above 3" – plenty available.

Come mounted to a thin steel frame – just tap the end flanges around the vice to secure.

Here is a typical E bay listing for 3" ones Item number

                            302801094456

Just cut and paste it into the E bay search bar.

Hi, I believe the No. 0 vice Richard means is the one in the list in the scan below.

The Fibre Grips he is looking for, I believe are in this scan below.

I do not know where to get any from now though.

                              Regards Nick.

Thanks for the pointers, chaps, very useful. That looks like the correct material, Michael.

I just use wood. Available in a range of hardness values from your local firewood stockist (aka skip).
One of my vices is the type with extra wide jaws, like 6in on a normal 4 in frame so it is easy to hold wood strips with a rubber band. Small slit in the working face for the band to shelter in. Softwood is great for deforming itself round a screw thread or other round item, or drilled to hold round stuff, or sawn Vs to hold squares over corners.

Record are now owned by Irwin and you can get soft jaws for 1/2/3 size vices from RS, at some price increase from the displayed advert above.

Try contacting knife making suppliers such as http://www.english-handmade-knives.co.uk they list red fibre sheet up to 3mm and black up to 6mm, although the 6mm is at the moment out of stock. But it might be worth a call as they also sell G10 which might do the job. You could also try bonding two 3mm thick strips to make 6mm.

Hi all, bit of an old thread but I was also dissappointed with the draper / magnetic style and started making custom fit vice jaws I intend to make sets for all record vices once I get all the dimensions (jaw height is what I need). I can make a set up if you are interested and am looking for people who could measure the jaw height and provide photos once fitted.
