Just a thought: would it be possible to counterbore the holes in the jaws and use shcs? …. and would such screws be any more obtainable? They would seem to be easier to work with in future.

Don’t you wish all vices used hex bolts from the rear of the jaws? I bet they come out easily.

          My Fortis steel vice does.

            That's interesting!

Never thought of Cycle thread for the screws!

At 26 tpi they would provide quite a clamping force for a little rotation.

It might be worth noting that the screws (at least those in my Record vice) are not the usual 90 or 120 degree countersunk screws but have an included angle nearer to 60/75 degrees.

So if you destroy the originals you might just find it difficult to get replacements.

I would agree wholeheartedly with using the vice jaws to prevent cam out. My vice had spent many months (probably years) in a friend back garden before he gave it to me to take to the local tip – it never got there.

All parts were totally seized but succumbed to soaking in paraffin, under my bench for a couple of months

              regards

Thanks chaps. All useful as usual.

Another question: what spec is the helical spring (circled)? The previous owner had abused the cross pin that holds the spring, and in the process mangled up the spring rendering it useless. It needs replacement.

Sorry, I haven't got a No.1, but in smaller and larger Record vices, the spring is an entirely non-critical, ultra-crude anti-backlash component. Anything that can be made to fit should be OK, or you could even fit a tube. A spring is, however, preferable because it will take some of the rattle out of the vice.

It’s worth remembering that the vice only uses a spring and light pin to retain the moving jaw when opening the vice, small parts placed on the all too convenient surface at the back of the vice can jam the slide when opening which will mangle the spring and shear the pin if you don’t stop when it starts to tighten up. Of course this is just something I have heardblush

I got the stuck screws out of my number 1 with heat on the casting and a hammer impact screwdriver.

                        Hi,

I thought a follow up to my previous post might be useful :-

I've removed one of my screws (I liberally coated them with copper grease when I rebuilt my vice) and would report that the screws are 1" long x 5/16" with a thread of 26tpi. The included angle is 60degrees – so a "Record Special"

Hi choochoo_baloo, a photo below of my No.1 spring, can't tell you the free length of it, but I had a look at it today as it is not fixed to anything at the moment. It has five turns inclusive of the ends and the wire is about 1.5mm diameter.

                          Hope this helps.

                          Regards Nick.
