what type of reamers are best for stainless 304 if you don't want them blunt in no time at all?

You can buy carbide reams either solid or carbide tipped. They are not cheap but it depends how many holes in stainless you are reaming.

One problem with stainless is the work-hardening caused by rubbing – caused by a blunt tool – and which then blunts the tool further. But I expect you have found that already.

            Cheers, Tim

A sharp tool, slow speed, but high feed rate is safest with SS. Lubricate with cutting/tapping oil.

Many thanks for these comments, as always they are helpful.

@David – will investigate these. 20 holes 7mm @ 2 inch deep for vacuum equpiment.

@Tim – yes, I have found it already. I do all what I can to ensure that reamer works as cutting rather than rubbing or cold forming device – but you know mistakes/errors do happen and drill 6.7 mm can on odd occassion cut a bit larger hole, particularly if hand sharpened.

@old mart – now I have lever operaed tailstock – it is God sent device for reaming. Handwheel ended up in box and wasn't seen from then onwards.

I avoid 304 stainless. 306 is bad enough for me. But for hobby use I get to choose which you cant do if an industry specification.
