      Thanks for the info. Trevor

Like Russell, I would be very interested to see some photos of what it can produce.

I just had a look at the spec. quoted here, and I'm rather confused regarding speeds.

You say "my Huxley has a feed-rate of 12m/min, and it needs it." … but the spec. shows a maximum "Building Speed" of 1,800mm/min, so I presume that the 12,000mm/min is a "Fast Traverse" speed.

Grateful if you can clarify this.

      MichaelG.

I'd be a tad concerned if my building was travelling at anywhere near 1,800mm/min smiley

This machine starts to look like a good balance between the many conflicting requirements.

Carriage return won't work so will post photo then text…….Image above shows a print directly off the printer, note the strings and little blobs. The blobs can be cut or filed but the main advantage is pockets with square corners and cross-holes printed in place.

My thoughts on the Huxley; Love it – perhaps the quality is a bit naff but the prints would take hours to machine, to draw something on a computer and then print it out in pla always fascinates me – and I have been programming and working CNC machines for 40 years – so I am not easily impressed. Bloody carriage return…..Having built it from a kit, I had some grief particularly the setting up of the software, but now it is working I do understand everything that moves and how it functions. Thanks for posting those pictures. Your quality looks a bit better than in the MEW article but obviously needs a bit of work if it's to be used for cosmetic parts.

Perhaps my expectations are too high as I used work with a company that made injection moulded parts for consumer equipment such as mobile phones. I guess it won't be long before the quality of finish gets there though.

3d printing is in it's infancy and will improve, but the price will remain high until they can be manufactured in quantities. Carriage return still not working. Most people I know who have printers love the building and setting up, but when it is working have not got a clue what to do with it, that is the next step. It needs to move away from the computer people and into the hands of engineers who can make something, puts me in a bit of a minority. Trevor

                                              Carriage return not working?

Is that CR, Line Feed, New Line, or just the return key? The again I'm not sure what you are refering to (PC or your 'Printer&#39?

Regarding these Reprap type machines something has not clicked with me, and surely I can't be the only one.

A lot of parts that are being made on these machines seem to be made purely because they can be, with no consideration being given as to whether its the best way of getting the end result.

One example. Is there any valid reason to make an assembly of 30 separate parts when one flat plate with three holes would do a better job? (One side of the support for the reel holder) The same thought applies to the actual spool, yes it can have nice hexagonal holes for nuts to drop into but it does not really need hexagon holes (it does not even need nuts if the holes were tapped, or better still had the female threads 'printed'. Having said all that an old empty cable reel is more time and cost effective.

I can see the original concept of a machine that could replicate itself was good (marketing/publicity?) idea, but that was some time ago. What I wonder about is, whether the limit to the accuracy and repeatability of the finished part is already restricted by the media and extrusion process rather than the rigidity of the construction?
