I have started on this model, the biggest project I have attempted to date! and would like to contact anyone who has had experience in construction of this model in 2" scale by John Haining. To date the boiler is complete and tested, now starting on horn plates and crankshaft – any help or guidance from fellow modeller would very much be appreciated.

Its not one of his most commonly made engines so there are not many about and with the trend for larger engines unlikely to be many more. You could also try asking on Traction Talk Forum's model section to see if anyone there has made it.

Hi Trevor. It's a while ago now since I built John Hainings Durham in 2" scale. Obviously the horn plates should be made as a handed pair where ever possible. You also could do with machining the faces of the screwed boiler bushes to maintain parallelism and squareness of the hair plates when they are attached. By some means you need to pick up the centers of the bushes onto the horn plates. As for the crankshaft, Blackgates did a malleable iron casting with machining lugs on each end. Not sure what yours will be like.? Good luck.

                  Hi Trevor

The RSJ is one of my original projects started in the 80s.It looks like you are further ahead than myself.

I started the boiler and it melted and then put in a box never to be found again. Done some boiler since and waiting to get enthusiasm back for the RSJ

in all that time, I think I have come across 2 others that have been completed and not many discussed as part built on forums.Station Road Steam had 2 part builts about a year ago. Super looking model and a bit different having a compound look to it.

Best of luck with it. Never worked out how the wheels were held on to the axles!

                    Hi

                    Just seen Jim c posts

I fabricated my crankshaft, its a bit of a lump.

A fellow member of Bradfod Model Engineering Society has built one of these. I cut most of the gear teeth for him a while ago.

One thing you might want to check is the size and geometry of the Stephensons linkage on the valve gear, it looks way too big on his engine and I think he has problems with it not having enough clearance to operate properly.

Hi Phil, thanks for the info will be useful when I get to that stage. Meanwhile it seems like there are probs with the crankshaft web fouling the turret boss – this is before any pipework is fitted!!. Would dearly like to have a chat with your fellow member of the Bradford MES to see if he had similar problems. Bit apprehensive about trying to overcome this issue before talking to someone else.
