As a native of Emsworth I became quite accustomed to using the local station and the EMUs on the former SR line (Southampton – Brighton) . Though more than 60 years later I am pretty sure it was on those trains that this sign used to puzzle me:
"Gentlemen Adjust Your Dress Before Leaving The Lavatory".
. . .
While readers of similar vintage may recall the old BBC panel-game My Word, played by four professional writers: Frank Muir and Dennis Norden, and two ladies (Dylis – ?) and another whose name escapes me completely. Well, it was a long while ago – when we had a proper Home Service, Light Programme and Third Programme, afore these new-fangled bland numbers.
One does stand out in my mind – either Norden or Muir explaining the famous complaint from the distaff side that we mere males never lower the seat. It went something like this:
"Railway carriage lavatories used to bear brass plaques saying simply, 'Gentlemen Lift The Seat'.
The lack of punctuation and 'please' renders this both peremptory command and a fine definition of a gentleman. So us leaving the woodwork up, proves us as true gentlemen".
