Two signs for toilets on a foreign railway station.

First one said — This is the first class toilet.

Next one said — The second class toilet is off the edge of platform 3.

I had no idea that modern train toilets were still releasing onto the track until quite recently. Must have been an additional horror for the track workers to face

The sign on our bog door is a small version of a Lynton & Barnstaple locomotive nameplate.

                            Hi br,

I believe the correct wording was:

                            "Gentlemen will please refrain,

From pulling on the toilet chain,

While the train is standing at the station."

This probably dates it back to the first half of the 20th century at the latest.

                            Regards,

                            Alan C.

I remember the contrast between the British and French trains on a school visit to Paris, The train to Newhaven was comfortable sprung upholstered seats and the French train from Dieppe had wooden slatted seats rather like a park bench, the loo was interesting as it obviously dropped straight to the track with a flap to control the draught should you need to be seated during the performance. The Metro was a contrast the other way as the introduction of the pneumatic tyred trains had begun and they were super smooth and quiet compared to the London Underground.

The now closed Platt Bridge railway station in the Wigan area is often referred to locally as 'Platt Waz', supposedly because in the days of old the train driver would stop at the platform and go and relieve himself ' have a waz' by the bridge.

Long time since 'Waste' was discharged onto the track UNLESS heritage line coaches haven't been converted. Stainless Steel 'collection' tanks installed under the three car DMUs serviced by vacuum extraction equipment back at the overnight service facilities at the depot. Used to supply them, and connection pipe work for BREL.

                                    Regards Ian.

That's a Virgin train, I take it, Graham?

That kind of lame humour is painfully common in signs on their trains.

I'd be more forgiving of Virgin's failed attempts at humour if their overall service as rail operators wasn't even more of a failure.

I can still remember Bar 1 in the Sheffield University students union back in the '70s
Three doors in a row, the outer two being "Ladies" and "Gents"; the centre one was "Switch Room"

Long time since 'Waste' was discharged onto the track …

Apparently not. Sewage was being dumped on the track at London mainline stations as late as 2014.

Although good progress has been made 25% of trains were still discharging on to the track in 2017. Operators committed to stop entirely by 2019, but the target was missed. Next year is on the cards, but some operators are still asking for Temporary Non-compliance status. Be nice if Network Rail's website published TNCs but I couldn't find any.

Fans of getting on with the job instead of Health and Safety nonsense might appreciate this collision report though!

As a native of Emsworth I became quite accustomed to using the local station and the EMUs on the former SR line (Southampton – Brighton) . Though more than 60 years later I am pretty sure it was on those trains that this sign used to puzzle me:

"Gentlemen Adjust Your Dress Before Leaving The Lavatory".

                                              . . .

While readers of similar vintage may recall the old BBC panel-game My Word, played by four professional writers: Frank Muir and Dennis Norden, and two ladies (Dylis – ?) and another whose name escapes me completely. Well, it was a long while ago – when we had a proper Home Service, Light Programme and Third Programme, afore these new-fangled bland numbers.

One does stand out in my mind – either Norden or Muir explaining the famous complaint from the distaff side that we mere males never lower the seat. It went something like this:

"Railway carriage lavatories used to bear brass plaques saying simply, 'Gentlemen Lift The Seat'.

The lack of punctuation and 'please' renders this both peremptory command and a fine definition of a gentleman. So us leaving the woodwork up, proves us as true gentlemen".

When i was a kid, the railway platforms all had prominent signs saying "No Expectorating".

I doubt that any potential expectorators of the 1960s had a clue what it meant. Must have been a leftover from an age too genteel to mention the word "spitting" in front of ladies.

I remember a sign at the swimming baths that used to confuse me: "No petting".
