Hello, I have some experience of model engineering but have not built a locomotive yet. I am deciding between Railmotor 3 or a 31/2" gauge Sweet Violet as a starter locomotive. If I select Railmotor. does anyone have copies of ME from 1968/69 when constructing it was described. I imagine for Sweet Violet I can follow the book for Sweet Pea. I don't hear of as many people building Sweet Violet compared with the numbers building Sweet Pea-I thought about Sweet Violet as it would be lighter in weight being 31/2" gauge and still have a simpler marine boiler. Any comments about my thinking?

      Thanks

          hi martin,

i cannot comment on Sweet Violet or Sweet Pea, but i have quite a bit of experience of dealing with Don Young's Railmotor design which as you state was described in ME 1968/69, though under the title 'push pull locomotive' or '0-4-0 locomotive'.

Railmotor No.3, the LSWR S14 variant, was described by Steve Titley and Harry Lumb in Don's magazine LLAS in a single article, with a sheet of drawing modifications by Don. it doesnt deal with all the alterations required.

i have all the articles, but a bit much to copy them all, but happy to help if you have any missing etc.

          cheers,

          julian

Thanks for your reply Julian. Good to know the set of words is accessible if I need them. As to Sweet Violet, does anyone know the finished weight of this loco when completed?

              hi

if you make the railmotor 3 make sure of the position of the turret bush on the boiler as the platework will foul it when erecting it

              regards

              peter

I would like to purchase the Locomotives Large and Small magazine containing the Railmotor 3 article – Reeves still has a few issues so I am hoping that it is one of those, if someone could please let me have the issue number.
Alternatively, if anyone has a scan of the article that they could send me I would really appreciate it.
                Thanks,
                Clive
