I have a small (about 15" LOA) radio control yacht I bought on holiday, many years ago as a quick build to give me something to do. It worked very well, but I stored it in a garage for seven months and with many other things the sails were despoilt by rats. I foolishly dumped the mast with the sails

You used to be able to buy extruded aluminium masts in many sizes for models, but I have not been able to find any on line. The alternative is just a bit of carbon fibre tent pole, but an alloy mast would look better.

Any ideas (other than milling one from the solid)?

        Neil

P.S. yes I am bored dog/cat/child sitting and cooking dinner so I can't stay in the workshop

P.P.S. On the plus side, saw a fantastic mock sun (wikipedia calls them sundogs) on the way back from Nottingham earlier.

          Hi Stub,

Martin Roberts of Housematin Sails sells aluminium masts according to his website.

            Thanks Andy,

Unfortunately those appear to be plain tubes, I am hoping to get the oval type witha slot down the back.

Rats ug they had a nest at the bottom of the field and they used to come up and try get into our free range chicken runs untill my cats and two dogs found the nest . Exit rats. largest was around 2' long.

Back to ME not a boat person though my father was and stll have a kit of his I must finish. It has every imaginable fitting for a 2.5' clipper. There is a sailing club affiliated to our BSMEE and they put on a fantastic display each year at our Thornbury show, If you are interested will find out a contact for you.

I am sure someone must make them.

                  Bob.

                    http://www.pjsails.co.uk/mastbooms.pdf is a broken link

2' – maybe my book on rats mentions "a buck which measured 19 inches long and weighed 2 1/2lb". I once trapped a big b*****d at 17"

                        Thanks Andy,

                        I never found a case-sensitive URL before!

Alas the price and sizes are too large. i shall stick with the carbon fibre tentpole idea. At least I can do so without gult now.

Strangely enough, it appears that "case-sensitive" is the standard

Hi Neil, have you thought of carbon fiber fishing rod blanks, or maybe a second hand carbon fiber rod, if you were here you could get a choise of half a dozen rods at just a few dollars each. Do they make hollow CF golf clubs? Ian S C

Two other options to consider traditional mast material wood in dowel form can be planed to the shape you required, or aluminium arrows available in a variety of colours.

My brother would never forgive me if I desecrated a fishing rod! He still has the beachcaster I built on a blank when we were teenagers!

                                Some interesting ideas though, thanks.

Neil, the hollow CF rods make good tail booms for gliders, they are strong, and light weight, and best of all they are ready made. Ian S C
