Hi, I have a question about using indexable lathe tools in a QCT on a Myford lathe.

The spec for a standard toolholder shows a thickness of 7mm for the lower clamping surface.  With a 3/8 sq shank the distance between the topslide and the tip ot the tool will be 16.5mm and this will increase to 17mm with a 10mm sq shank.

On my lathe the top slide to centre line distace is 16.25mm so does this mean it’s not worth buying a QCT or am I missing something.

Haha, i just re-read your post and edited to suit.

The shanks are tough but not hardened steel so aslong as you dont mind milling a 1/16th off the bottoms you will be fine.  After building up a set from shows and exhibitions of 11+ holders i can say that they are all full of tools ready to use – saves ages in setting tools up.

                Hi Nemesis,

A note of warning, you may think three or four holders will be enough, don’t be fooled. I counted mine up and I have fifteen and still not enough. What is the point of having to change tools over, the QC holder should allow you to have ALL your tools ready for use. (All right I know we are living in the real world, but we can dream can’t we?)

                  Hi
I know I haven’t had my little Comet lathe for long but I’ve already got 12 and I got some bar last week to make some more.

you will find the main problem is finding somewhere to put them .

                  cheers

                    Hi There
Although many quick change holders are useful, if you make all your brass cutting tools out of the same size tool steel, you can change them over without losing the height setting.

                    regards David

                      Hi There Mr. Editor, Sir,

You bother with special tools for Brass? How strange.

It must be nice to be able to afford the dam’ stuff anyway, every time I turn any brass I look at the swarf and cry.

                        I could start a foundry I suppose……………………

                        cheers
