      Hi all

I’m totally frustrated with the standard toolpost and looking for a QCTP that will allow me to use the largest size tool possible.

I’m sure everyone on here with a Clarke (and WAKO) has looked to do the same – so thought I would ask members for any details of proven makes/models.

      Thanks

hi have a look at this from RDG just check the center height for your lathe.

        https://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/QUICK-CHANGE-TOOLPOST-SET-FOR-MYFORD-LATHE-WITH-PARTING—VEE-HOLDER—MYFQUICK.html

On my lathe, an M Type lathe, i have made special tool holders which bolt to the cross slide as this allows me to hold tools more sturdy on center height.

the boring bar holder with 2 diferant size tool holder bores. perhaps you could do somthing similar to fit your lathe.

          Thanks, David

Really helpful. Ive had a look at RGD – I think I can go one size bigger than that (if 28mm is my magic number).

Do you know what the holder thickness is (what the tool sits on) on that T37?

And those tools look great. I had not thought to make something like that. Especially as I have some old – real tungsten carbide-tipped turning tools which I think would be better to use.

I would be interested to see your drawings for those – so I can modify for my machine.

          Regards

          Danni

Just be aware that while a QCTP system is very handy, these can reduce tools rigidity slightly and particularly if you are looking to use ‘heavier’ tools and taking deeper cuts this may be a problem.

The rear toolpost in David Georges’ post is a very good idea. There are numerous published articles and Youtubes on how to make. I just recently knocked one up (no specific design, made it up as I went along) and it works a treat, specifically for parting-off.

This subject has been covered many, many times in the past, but as you may be aware, the re-vamped website is causing a few ‘issues’ so finding these may be problematic – but worth it if you have the time & patience!

            regards Mike

p.s I can’t get that link in David’s post to work. I think its incorrect (doesn’t work from elsewhere)

The inexpensive 250-100 tool post fits. I’ve used one on my cl500 for years.

                It did work.

Thanks John. That is certainly an improvement on the standard toolpost.

If you rediscover any of those earlier posts could you drop me a link?

Id like to see a pic of your parting off tool. Actually, that is one main issue I have with using the standard T-post.

I have an HSS blade tool (maybe it came when I bought the lathe), and the design of it doesn’t allow the clamp-nuts to get a proper grip. Obviously, chatter is a problem with parting anyway – better to Hacksaw than this thing.

Does anyone have experience using a T51 QUICKCHANGE TOOLPOST SET BOXFORD SIZE WITH 2 STANDARD 1 VEE 1 PARTING HOLDER on a CL500

I would recomend the wedge type 250-111 toolpost. The rigidity is very good, and I almost always just use it for parting off rather than a rear toolpost I also have for my Bantam lathe. It is also more rigid than the previous four way toolpost it replaced.

A useful advantage is the precise location of the toolholders, allowing to swap tools and get back to exact sub thou cutting edge positions, for example when making several identical parts.

                              Really appreciate the advice.
